Twitch just announced a policy update prohibiting streaming of online gambling in jurisdictions that don’t provide adequate industry protection.

Alexander Korsager, COO of safe gambling advice site Time2play.com has issued the following statement:

We welcome the development. Twitch streamers often promoted unsafe gambling offers. What they were streaming is not the reality of gambling – it’s been a supercharged version mostly showcasing unrealistic displays of constant winning — which most users just won’t experience.

It’s been a known issue in the industry for a while. Gamblers suffering from addiction have unfettered exposure to sites without proper monitoring of responsible player activities. We expect this change to lead to a further boost to the regulated, safe casino offerings.

Twitter is abuzz with talks of the irony around Twitch’s ban on gambling before over-sexualized content. But Twitch is not banning gambling. They are banning the promotion of UNSAFE gambling and unrealistic outcomes. There’s no doubt that this is a win for everyone who enjoys treating gambling as entertainment, but appreciates the freedom to be free from scams.

There will still be entertaining streams of great games. The only difference is it will be from platforms that follow the regulation in place to protect users.

It will be interesting to see how fast the streamers enter into regulated partnerships with the likes of Fanduel, Draftkings, and BetMGM; or whether they simply move to other streaming platforms now. Surely every major streaming platform in the public eye will follow Twitch’s lead and explore enacting similar policy updates.

Time2play.com was founded in 2021 by gaming industry veterans who united to combat false and sensationalized online casino information. Dissatisfied with the present state of casino comparison sites, we’ve disrupted the industry by offering casino reviews researched by experts and backed by real data. We do this because we believe that the casino industry deserves better – and, more importantly, so do its users.
