The Scarlets have teamed up with Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) to publish a comprehensive fitness and nutritional guide for young people in Wales.
The booklet was launched at a special event at Parc y Scarlets, with a visit from TV chef Chris ‘Flamebaster’ Roberts cooking up a storm for some of the players, as the region continues its support for Welsh farmers and rural communities.
Called ‘Your guide to fitness skills and awesome grills’, the guide contains healthy recipes, advice on staying fit and active, and highlights the many nutritional benefits of a balanced diet with locally-sourced Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef.
Brought up on a cattle and sheep farm in Llandovery, Scarlets’ prop Wyn Jones knows first-hand the passion and hard work that goes into producing quality, locally sourced products such as Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef.
Speaking about the importance of good nutrition while supporting the Welsh agricultural industry, Wyn said: “As a Welsh athlete, Welsh Beef is important to me on two levels. Not only is it an excellent source of protein, packed with many nutritional benefits essential for my recovery, but coming from a farming background, I also appreciate how and where it is farmed.
“It is good to know that Welsh Beef and Welsh Lamb are bred here, local to Llanelli and to myself in Llandovery. Knowing that I am eating a local, natural, quality product that has been cared for, with plenty of fresh air and grass-fed, is something quite special.”
BBQ chef and TV star Chris Roberts visited Parc y Scarlets to help launch the booklet and cooked up some healthy Welsh Beef steak sandwiches for the players.
Chris said: “The great thing about Welsh Beef is that it does not have to be loaded with rich sauces to taste good. Welsh Beef steak, such as sirloin, is amazing simply lightly seasoned and grilled and served with a punchy salad or salsa – it is also phenomenal in a quick and healthy stir-fry.
“Welsh Beef, as well as Welsh Lamb, are so easy to prepare and cook and you get a hit of that amazing flavour and lots of goodness in one go. You cannot say that about many foods!”
HCC has recently been working on a number of initiatives aimed at increasing awareness of how quality, locally sourced Welsh red meat can form an important part of people’s diets. This is coupled with the strong sustainability credentials of the industry in Wales, and the many benefits of people buying locally sourced and ethically produced food.
HCC’s Market Development Manager Rhys Llywelyn added: “HCC is delighted to partner with the Scarlets to create this handy guide and help highlight the nutritional benefits of red meat. This booklet is ideal for young people who want to stay fit and healthy and lead an active lifestyle.
“Equipped with the knowledge that eating locally sourced Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef can play an integral role in nutrition, young people can also feel empowered knowing that while they support Welsh agriculture, they are also playing an integral role in supporting the economies of their local communities.”
The guide is available free of charge from the Scarlets club shop or can also be downloaded from the health section of www.eatwelshbeef.com
