Responding to an IFS report which warns that the UK Chancellor will be forced into “big and painful spending cuts” due to a weaker economy, Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds MS has warned that the knock-on effects to Wales will be devastating and risk dragging thousands into poverty and putting off investors in the Welsh economy.
Commenting Jane Dodds said:
“Due to this Government’s pure incompetence and shambolic budget, the Conservatives are on the verge of having to commit to large spending cuts which will have a devastating knock-on effect on Wales.
“All of this economic turmoil was entirely avoidable and is a direct result of the Conservatives thinking that they could borrow money to provide tax cuts to the richest in society and large corporations.
“Cuts to public services will inevitably force hard decisions in Wales and the Welsh Government budget is cut. That is simply the last thing we need when the Welsh NHS is already struggling and child poverty rates are sky-high.
“Not only will this impact everyday households across Wales, but the desired effects from the Conservatives haven’t even materialized. Rather than be pleased, big business and international investors have been spooked by the Conservatives’ economic vandalism.
“A sustained period of a lack of investment in public services and infrastructure is putting investors off of setting up in Wales and the UK, this is of course on top of Brexit which already made the UK a less attractive place to set up a business than it had been previously.
“Kwasi Kwarteng should resign before any more damage is done. Then the government needs to scrap this rotten budget and work to ensure our public services and infrastructure get the funding they deserve.
