South Wales Police are encouraging the public to report concerns of hate crime during National Hate Crime Awareness Week from 8 to 15 October 2022.

This year, the Force received over a thousand reports of hate crime. Despite this, hate crime concerns being reported has decreased since last year. South Wales Police are urging anyone who is a victim of hate crime or witnesses a hate-related incident to report it.

Hate crime can manifest itself in many ways, including physical assault, verbal abuse, online bullying or harassment, and in many other criminal offences. With hate crime it is “who” the victim is, or “what” the victim appears to be, that motivates the offender to commit the crime.

Superintendent Jason Rees said: “We are dedicated to tackling this most abhorrent of crimes that has such significant impacts on victims and wider society.

“Through reporting we can take action against perpetrators and provide victims with the support they need.”

South Wales Police have a dedicated team of hate crime officers, who will be in schools, sports clubs and communities during the week to help raise awareness of hate crime and encourage reporting.
