Caerphilly county borough council has unveiled exciting plans to create an attractive new market development in the heart of Caerphilly town centre

Caerphilly county borough council has unveiled exciting plans to create an attractive new market development in the heart of Caerphilly town centre.

The plan, which forms part of a wider regeneration blueprint for the town, will see the creation of a bustling new market on land at Park Lane. The footprint of the new market includes the site of the former Specsavers building which was demolished recently by the Council with funding support from Welsh Government’s Transforming Town’s initiative.

The Leader of Council, Cllr Sean Morgan welcomed the exciting news, “This proposed market development will help breathe new life into the town and forms part of the Caerphilly 2035 Masterplan which will help transform this key strategic town centre over the coming years.”

“The proposed closure of the privately owned Market Hall at Pentrebane Street will result in the creation of this new, fit for purpose market development at a more prominent site. This will also facilitate the delivery of a new mixed-use development on Pentrebane Street which will provide much-needed new homes and new commercial and retail space on the ground floor.”

The new market will, subject to funding from Welsh Government, provide 28 small-scale units and space for additional ‘pop-up’ market traders. The site will also host an external events venue to further enhance the visitor attractions on offer within the town centre.

Deputy Leader of Council, Cllr Jamie Pritchard added, “The new market proposal will support local traders in growing and expanding their businesses whilst also providing employment opportunities. Located on the pedestrian thoroughfare between the transport interchange and the castle, the market will be in a key position to attract visitors to the town, helping put Caerphilly on the map as an exciting and vibrant destination in South Wales.”

“These are indeed exciting plans, but I would urge local people to continue to support the existing traders within the market hall at Pentrebane Street, as these proposals are likely to take some time to progress.”

New market – Facts and Figures:

  • 28 new small-scale commercial units.
  • Including 7 exciting new bars and restaurants.
  • Space for an additional 15 ‘pop-up’ market stalls for monthly markets or local festivals.
  • Space for outdoor music concerts and events.
  • Covered ‘market-hall’ style external seating areas.
  • Fronting onto Cardiff Road – helping to further improve the already successful high-street.

A planning application for the new market is due to be submitted for consideration and a public consultation has been launched to seek views on the proposals. The survey can be accessed here:

It is anticipated that the new market would open in early Summer 2023.

Plans for a new hotel development within the vicinity are also being considered as part of the wider regeneration masterplan.

Caerphilly county borough council is working closely with Welsh Government and a range of other partners to deliver the ambitious multi-million pound blueprint for the town called the Caerphilly 2035 Place Making Programme.
