5 eco-friendly gadgets that can save Brits up to £750 a year

Top tech designed to cut all utility costs, from glass kettles to water-efficient  shower heads

The prospect of huge home energy bills is a massive concern across the UK, especially as we approach winter. With the new energy price cap coming into force, Brits are looking for even more ways to save money on gas and electricity.

One way to do this is by simply using less gas and electricity where possible. Insurance provider, SO-SURE, has looked into a range of tech-focused appliances designed to do just that, and how much they will save the average family a year.

1  1. See how much you brew with a glass kettle

According to the Energy Saving Trust, the average Brit boils their kettle four times a day at a cost of £203.72 per year! [1]. Now, this is already substantially less than the cost of 4 daily Starbucks beverages but with this particular kettle, you could save even more.

With a 66% increase in energy efficiency over typical kettles, this Russell Hobbs Illuminating Glass Kettle has a one-cup setting so you only boil the amount of water needed and switching to an energy-saving kettle could save you around £25 a year.

2 2. Cut cooking costs with an Airfryer

Airfryers have skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing. According to Argos, they sold 1.6 air fryers per minute in the first week of September 2022.

And for Brits looking for more energy-efficient ways to cook, look no further than an airfryer, as they’re a lot cheaper to run than an oven. As an example, the total energy cost of cooking chips will cost approximately 15p in an air fryer and 35p in a fan-assisted oven. Whilst this is a small difference, over time, it can mean a saving of around £146 a year.

3 3. Save precious water with more efficient showers

The average Brit uses 50 litres of water per shower which equates to approximately £219 per person per year!

The Methven Aurajet RUA Shower Handset is one of the most water-efficient shower heads on the market. Despite its futuristic halo-shaped design, the ‘Aurajet’ technology means that you still get the full-bodied spray of a conventional shower, while using nearly 40% less water per shower.

This could mean savings of up to £87.60 a year on the average water bill.

4 4. Heat yourself with an electric blanket

One way to save money on heating is by focusing on yourself and your furniture, as opposed to the whole house, by using electric blankets.

According to Ofgem, one kWh of electricity now costs approximately 52p. An electric blanket, such as the 150W Dreamland Anti-Bacterial Heated Underblanket, costs as little as 7.8p to run at full power for an hour.

It costs a medium household approximately £609 a year to power central heating, so even if you were to use an electric blanket for four hours a day every day during the winter, you would only spend £297.60 per year, with huge savings to be made.

5 5. Don’t waste heating with a Hive Smart Thermostat

As the weather gets colder, many Brits will wake up and turn the heating on and leave it on for the day or have it on a timer meaning it comes on when people aren’t in. Having a Hive smart thermometer allows you to turn it on remotely, and knows when you have gone out, automatically turning it off to save money.

The Hive Mini has a range of useful options for saving energy including holiday modes, a scheduling feature, and heating boosts for when it’s extra cold.

People can save up to a third (31%) on heating using a smart thermostat, which means average savings of around £190 a year.
