The UK capital is home to the highest number of casinos than any other popular Las Vegas alternative destination, according to a new study. The city was found to be home to just over 50 casinos, with the next best location having just 41.

Despite being stylised as ‘Sin City’, Las Vegas itself only has around 23 official casinos.

London was actually ranked third overall in the list of nine alternative ‘Less Vegas’ destinations, missing out on the top spot to Puerto Rico and Macau respectively.

However the UK city was the only destination included in the study to rank in the top spot for three separate categories.

The research comes from British Gambler, a UK online gambling aggregator, who compiled the list of popular Las Vegas alternatives after analysing Google Trends data and noticing that interest in the search term ‘Casino Holiday’ has been steadily increasing over the last few months.

According to Google Trends, the term reached its second highest peak in the last five years at the start of September. The only month where interest in ‘Casino Holiday’ was higher was July 2020.

London also took the top spot for affordability in travel, which isn’t that surprising as every other destination was scored against the average cost of a flight from Heathrow.

When London was removed from the list, Monte Carlo was the cheapest destination to fly to, setting travellers back on average just £87 for a return flight. For comparison a return flight to Las Vegas would cost over £1,750 per person.

The UK city also ranked the highest for ‘Instagram-ability’, with British Gambler analysing the number of posts on the platform using the location name as a hashtag.

According to the data London had nearly four times as many posts as Las Vegas.

The city was let down by its colder climate and the expensive cost of a pint – with a beer in London costing five times more than in Macau which was home to the cheapest pint at an average cost of just £1.20.

The remaining ‘Less Vegas’ destinations in their respective order were:

  • St Louis
  • Amsterdam
  • Gold Coast
  • Singapore
  • Monte Carlo
  • Niagara Falls
