The 5th of November is fast approaching and over the past 7 days, searches for ‘how to help dog scared of fireworks’ (+1850%) and ‘animal friendly fireworks’ (70%) have increased significantly. These search trends suggest that lots of pet owners are looking for ways to keep their pets calm this Bonfire Night.

The loud noises and big bangs that come from fireworks can startle our pets so it’s important as owners we do everything can to keep our pets calm and happy as the 5th of November approaches.

To help, Kitty Bingo has formed some top tips to keep your animals safe and happy this Bonfire Night:

  1. Prepare your pets

It’s not too late to try and prepare your pets for Bonfire Night. By playing the sounds of Bonfire Night on the TV or a speaker, you can acclimatize your pets to the bangs and crackles of fireworks. However, make sure to only do this in small intervals, especially if your pets are showing signs of distress.

  1. Make sure they are comfortable

Bonfire Night can be scary for all animals, big and small. There are several ways in which you can try to make your pets feel safe and comfortable. You could build a makeshift den in their favourite part of the home or perhaps they’d feel more comfortable sitting on your lap cuddling you.

  1. Keep the noise out the best that you can

Make sure all your windows and curtains are shut, this will help block out the bright lights and some of the noise. You could also play some music or turn on the television to help drown out the noise of the fireworks.

  1. Give your pets something to distract them

Whether it be their favourite toy or a delicious, tasty treat, distracting your pet from the fireworks can be a great way to keep them happy. Consider taking your pet to the quietest part of the house, away from the fireworks, to play with them.

  1. Stay calm!

Pets can feed off your emotions, so it’s important to remain calm. Your calm presence will reflect on your pet and will help make them feel safe. While you still want to comfort your pet when they’re stressed, it’s important to not re-enforce their anxieties by making too much of a fuss.
