Applications for nursery aged placements starting in January 2023, and reception age placements starting in September 2023 at a new Welsh language primary school in Neath are now open.
The newly refurbished Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Tregeles is located at the premises previously occupied by Neath Abbey Primary School at St John’s Terrace, Neath Abbey.
Placements will open in a phased approach with nursery pupils starting at the school first in January 2023. Full capacity of the school will be reached in September 2029.
When fully established, the school will have capacity for up to 210 full-time primary pupils and 45 part-time nursery age children. It will also have a childcare provision on site to give families in the area greater choice and flexibility, as well as helping to develop preschool Welsh language speaking and listening skills.
The new school has been developed as part of Neath Port Talbot Council’s Welsh in Education Strategic Plan. It will provide pupils with an exciting and motivating learning environment embracing the principles of the new curriculum for Wales, with the aim of promoting the Welsh language, wellbeing, equality and inclusion.
Councillor Nia Jenkins, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Training, said: “This exciting development reflects our vision for promoting and ensuring access to Welsh language learning for pupils in Neath Port Talbot. We believe that all children should benefit from the opportunity to learn, appreciate and shape their lives through the medium of Welsh.
“Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Tregeles will provide high quality provision and support that will enable all learners, their families and the wider community to benefit from access to Welsh-medium education and experiences.”
