Geography Awareness Week: Study finds 71% of Cardiff don’t know how many oceans there are in the world

For Geography Awareness Week, travel experts at Planet Cruise have put Britain's knowledge of the world's five oceans to the test!

  • A new study by Planet Cruise has revealed that only 29of Cardiff residents know there are five oceans in the world.
  • The Indian Ocean was the hardest ocean to locate on a world map whereas the Arctic Ocean was the easiest ocean to locate.

For Geography Awareness Week, travel experts at Planet Cruise have put Britain’s knowledge of the world’s five oceans to the test!

Whilst many of us enjoy going to the beach, taking part in a boat trip or even venturing off on a luxury cruise, how many of us can confidently name and locate the oceans we are surrounded by?

By conducting a new survey, Planet Cruise can reveal how many Brits can accurately locate the five world oceans on a map, as well as simply answer just how many there are. Let me tell you… the results are shocking!

71% of Cardiff residents are unaware there are FIVE oceans in the world

Shockingly, Cardiff ranks 14th  for the best Geography knowledge in the UK. The survey revealed that only 29% of Cardiff residents knew there were five oceans in the world – meaning a huge 71% were unsure of the major oceanic divisions.

To some people’s surprise, since 2021 a new ocean, the Southern Ocean, has been scientifically recognised making the total number of oceans now five.

Interestingly the research also saw that the younger generations had the highest percentage of correct answers in comparison to the older generations who may of remembered what they were originally taught in school.

Out of the world’s oceans, the one Cardiff struggled to locate the most on a map was the Indian Ocean.

Close behind was the Southern Ocean with 30% of people incorrectly locating it on the world map, followed by the Pacific Ocean.

The ocean, which was the easiest for Cardiff to locate, however, was the Arctic Ocean with 84% of people placing it correctly on the map and only 16% of people getting it wrong.
