Since the start of the war in Ukraine, residents across the Caerphilly county borough have shown incredible generosity offering safe homes for people fleeing the crisis. The warmth and welcome provided has been a lifeline to many, but there are many more who need help.

Cllr Shayne Cook, Cabinet Member for Housing at Caerphilly County Borough Council, is asking for more residents to consider becoming hosts.

Hosts provide a route to safety for Ukrainians, and their immediate family members, forced to escape their homeland. Support is available to both hosts and guests from a dedicated team at the Council.

Sarah Willans is currently a host in the county borough, she said of her experience with her guest “I love having her around, and she’s positively enhanced my life – she has a great sense of humour that somehow transcends the language barrier, and she’s endlessly thoughtful and helpful. I’m very happy to have her here for as long as she wants to stay.”

Cllr Cook commented “As Sarah’s example shows, becoming a host can be incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. It is unimaginable the atrocities being experienced by those fleeing Ukraine and we’re proud to offer a place of sanctuary in the Caerphilly borough.”
