SEASON’S EATINGS: Aldi crowned the cheapest supermarket to buy your Christmas dinner from this year, with essential ingredients and Christmas pudding costing £2.70 a head

Aldi has come out on top as the cheapest British supermarket to shop for your roast dinner this Christmas.

To determine which supermarket has the best value for money during the festive season, consumer finance experts at CashLady.com conducted research into the prices of key roast dinner ingredients from eight of the UK’s leading stores. This data was then used to rank each from one to eight, with one being the cheapest and eight being the most expensive.

The following items were included in this investigation:

  • A whole turkey
  • Roast potatoes
  • Carrots
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Red cabbage
  • Gravy granules
  • Stuffing
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Christmas pudding

With Brits expected to be increasingly mindful of their money over the coming months, the findings discovered that Aldi is the place to be for those looking to save some pennies this Christmas. For just over £24, you can buy all of the essentials for a traditional roast dinner, without making a serious dent in your budget. This cost covers Christmas dinner (and dessert!) for 8-10 people – that’s approximately £2.71 per person.

On the pricier side was M&S, where shoppers can pick up the same items for a hefty £57.84 – more than double the price of Aldi. You can always find Aldi coupons here.

Those looking to Waitrose for their Christmas dinner could be expected to pay a whopping £35 more than Aldi’s customers. With prices reaching an eye-watering £60.58, the supermarket sits firmly as the most expensive option on our list.

Supermarket  Price Ranking
Aldi £24.43
Asda £25.84
Tesco £26.33
Lidl £28.71
Morrisons £30.87
Sainsbury’s £48.15
M&S £57.84
Waitrose £60.58

Commenting on the findings, CashLady.com Consumer Finance Expert, Dan Whittaker said:

“With Christmas 2022 being the first time that many families will be celebrating together since the pandemic, Brits across the nation will be looking forward to their roast dinner this year more than ever. As the centrepiece of the day, it will be reassuring to know that this December, you and your family can enjoy Christmas day without having to break your bank in the process.”

“If you look in the right places, a delicious festive meal can be bought for as little as £24, feeding between 8 and 10 guests – even more cause for celebration!”

The findings have been released by Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) authorised and regulated credit broker CashLady.com
