Thanks to your donations, Hywel Dda Health Charities has been able to provide £12,000 to equip a new play room for Cilgerran children’s ward at Glangwili Hospital.
The NHS charity has purchased height-adjustable tables for play activities, classroom tables, small tables and chairs in red and purple, a sofa, lockable storage cupboards for play equipment, art cupboards and book cases.
There are also sensory pods, which create a safe, therapeutic environment for children with
extra needs, so they can feel included in activities within the play room. And there’s new play equipment to encourage physical development.
Also provided have been disco lights and speakers, light-up sensory cubes, sensory floor tiles, waterproof children’s overalls, splash mats, dolls and educational toys.
Karen Thomas, Head of Therapeutic Play, said: “It’s fantastic to have been able to have set up a new play room on the ward.
“A designated play room is invaluable and this new equipment is creating a safe environment, allowing all children and young adults to feel included, with separate areas for children and teenagers.
“Being able to play while in hospital means that children and young people can continue an aspect of their normal life. Play is familiar and reassuring. In hospital, it helps children to learn and develop, and to feel less anxious.
“Play rooms have an important role in the healing process and it will help our Therapeutic Play Team to work more effectively, helping the children to understand their treatments and, importantly, have fun!”

Nicola Llewelyn, Head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive.”
