  • After the New Year celebrations 54% of UK households till have their Christmas decorations up
  • Just a third (34%) of households wait until the symbolic twelfth night after Christmas to take down their decorations
  • One fifth (20%) stretch out their Christmas decorations until the first weekend of January (7th/8th)

New research has revealed the most popular date Brits take down their Christmas decorations, with millions of Brits choosing to take them on Boxing Day.

The findings come as retailer Next surveyed 2,000 Brits about their Christmas decoration habits.

The most popular date for Brits to take down their Christmas decorations is the twelfth night after Christmas Day, with just over a third (34%) doing so.

Traditionally, the twelfth night falls on either January 5th of 6th each year and marks the religious end to Christmas celebrations. While this originated back in the fourth century, it’s clear that is it still a prominent milestone to this day.

The data also shows that many Brits take advantage of the New Year’s bank holiday, with 15% opting to spend the time taking down their decorations. Meanwhile one in five (20%) of Brits choose to wait until the first weekend of January before packing away their decorations.

A spokesperson for Next commented on the findings: “For many people, taking down the Christmas decorations prepares them for the new year ahead. It’s a great opportunity to re-set and clean the house after all the festivities.

“When packing away decorations it’s important to consider a few things to avoid the stresses of untangling Christmas lights next winter. For glass baubles and ornaments bubble wrap is the best solution for protecting them, however old newspapers and even used wrapping paper will still prove an effective solution.

“Labelled storage containers are also a huge help; you don’t want to mistake your Christmas decorations for Halloween ones!”
