- The winner of The Royal Mint Museum’s 2022 Medal Design Competition to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has been announced.
- The winner is Trystan Vaughan, a former student of the University of South Wales. Trystan has won a specimen of his medal struck in bronze and a sum of £5,000.
6th January 2023: The winner of The Royal Mint Museum’s 2022 Medal Design Competition has been announced.The competition for students and recent graduates was held to commemorate Her Late Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee celebrating her 70-year reign in 2022.
University of South Wales graduate Trystan Vaughan from Church Village, Rhondda Cynon Taff, won the competition. He said: “I’m thrilled to have won this opportunity to design a medal commemorating the Platinum Jubilee of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”
Entrants to the competition, which was started in early 2022 in the lead up to the Platinum Jubilee of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, were asked to design a medal inspired by the changes that have occurred during Her Late Majesty’s reign. The competition was open to all undergraduate students and recent graduates whose courses ended in the last two years.
Over 120 entries were received. Product Design Lead at the Royal Mint, Lee Jones, Director of the Royal Mint Museum, Dr Kevin Clancy and celebrated artist Hughie O’Donoghue selected the winning design which features portraits of Her Late Majesty on the obverse and a Tudor Rose design on the reverse.
Royal Mint Museum Director, Dr Kevin Clancy, said: “We are delighted to announce the winner of our medal design competition to commemorate this momentous occasion. Choosing the winning design was a difficult decision as there were many excellent submissions but the judging panel was unanimous in its decision that Trystan’s design met the brief in the most accomplished and appropriate way. We are delighted to be able to present the prizes to such a worthy winner.”
