Seren Isla Price, from Llanelli, at only 5 years of age started out with the aim of completing the national Three Peaks Challenge within 24 hours in what started out as a charity challenge in an attempt for her to become the youngest girl to complete a challenge of this nature, but then things took a turn for the heroic.

Seren braved winter conditions worse than me (her farther who is a qualified mountain leader) have ever seen but completed all 3 mountains in 47.5 hours becoming the youngest girl to have completed this challenge in under 48hrs and also the youngest girl to have completed an extreme winter charity challenge of this nature. In doing so she raised £725 for her chosen charity supporting sick children (Birmingham Children’s Hospital).

The challenge took the father and daughter team slightly longer than they’d originally planned, as they played a crucial lifesaving role in a mountain rescue operation that led to a young lady being airlifted off Ben Nevis.

Just as the pair  completed their ascent of the Ben Nevis peak, braving freezing winter conditions, snow, fog, and high winds, they spotted a young couple who were guiding a woman from the peak of the mountain. Father and daughter, seeing that something was wrong, asked what the problem was, revealing that the woman (from London) was unprepared for the ascent, and had become fatigued.

Mountain rescue was called, and with rapidly fading daylight, Seren and Glyn helped by providing torchlight this small group back down to a point that an air ambulance could land. Seren, prepared and thoughtful, gave the fatigued woman her Lucozade to provide some much needed energy. Once the pair were able to spot SOS torch signals, they approached the mountain rescue team and gave them directions to meet the fatigued woman, passing other walkers on the way who themselves helped walk the woman down to the helicopter.

“Seren is an amazing little girl,” one of the walkers on the hill commented.

Sarah’s father, Glyn, had this to say:
“We are totally proud of our little girl, with her kind nature and always wanting to help others. She dreams of becoming a doctor, and on the hill, realising that she had already been braving these challenging winter conditions for over six hours at the time, I asked her if she wanted to help or get off the mountain, and she chose to say, saying ‘This is my job to help people’.
“Me being an ex-firefighter, this is second nature, but for her to think like that really takes words from me!”

Though the delay set back their original goal, the pair were just relieved to see a happy ending to what could have been a more tragic story, as happened in a similar case involving a walker who became caught by an avalanche only to pass away the following night, underscoring the very real risks presented by mountains of that scale during this time of year.
Despite the cold and the setback, after a quick refuelling and warm up stop at McDonalds in Fort William, Seren and Glyn went on to complete the challenge, braving harsh conditions unique to each mountain.

Seren is incredibly happy to have completed the challenge, and is thankful for the support, sponsorship, and kind words that have been sent her way as she undertook the challenge!
