Home to over 400 languages and one of the most complex cultural fabrics to exist globally, StoryTerrace has unveiled the very life stories that form the complex web of society that is America. With thousands of anecdotal accounts surrounding life stories, uplifting and tragic in equal measure, Rutger Bruining, CEO of StoryTerrace, is keen to discuss the stories of a nation.

Escaping a dangerous upbringing through a career of service: Meet Tamika Johnson, a remarkable Michigan native with an inspirational story to tell

Tamika Johnson has an incredible story to tell of overcoming adversity to reach the lofty heights of Camp David. Johnson came from a childhood torn apart by addiction. Ending up in a group home for troubled youth as a teenager, her foster parents encouraged her to join the Navy resulting in a successful career, fighting against injustices and adversity every step of the way. This landed her a position working for the Bush family at Camp David, ending up on a first-name basis with them.

Recalling the incredible transition, Johnson said: “I came from nothing, and now I’m standing at the dinner table of the president of the United States – and he knows who I am.” Writing one’s story is far more than just an activity to result in a hard-back book to be passed down to children and great-grandchildren. It can be a beacon of hope for those going through similar circumstances. After enlisting the help of StoryTerrace to bring her story to life, Johnson chose to send some copies of her biography to the group home that she was in as a teenager. Speaking of that decision, she said: “I wanted to let every young woman and girl who is going through something rough in their life to know that they can overcome and can go on to be a success story. I think that others would benefit from sharing their story. Stories are very powerful, and we just don’t use them enough.”
