Research: Most Instagrammable Harry Potter Filming Locations

  • Cliffs of Moher in Ireland are at the top of the list, with 683,735 tags on Instagram.
  • Glencoe, located in the Scottish Highlands, is in second place; it has 542,466 Instagram tags.
  • In third place is London’s Borough Market, which has 524,363 tags.

Although it has been over a decade since the filming of the last movie in the Harry Potter series, the wizarding world is finding new fans among the younger generations, while the more mature ones haven’t forgotten the comfort and escape that Harry Potter books and movies have provided.

A new research commissioned by Gembyte.com took a look at Instagram hashtags to come up with a list of the most Instagrammable locations across the UK and Ireland that helped create the magical world of Harry Potter.

1. Cliffs of Moher, Ireland

Tagged 683,675 times on Instagram, Cliffs of Moher are at the top of this list. Ireland’s most popular natural attraction has been featured in several movies, like Leap Year, The Princess Bride, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. CGI was used to blend Lemon Rock with the magnificent scenery, and it is where Harry and Dumbledore apparate from Hogwarts in search for one of the Horcruxes.

2. Glencoe, Scottish Highlands

Scottish Highlands were used for many of the exterior shots throughout the movies. Specifically, fans will recognize Glencoe from the third movie, where many of the events are happening around Hagrid’s stone hut. The village was also used for the outside scenes in the sixth movie, along with Glenfinnan. On Instagram, Glencoe has been tagged 542,332 times, putting it in second place on this list.

3. Borough Market, London

London’s most famous market is featured in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban. The stoney looking street where The Knight Bus drops Harry in front of The Leaky Cauldron can be found in the southeast part of the Borough Market in London. This haven for all the foodies in and around London has 534,303 tags on Instagram.

4. Piccadilly Circus, London

Although featured briefly, fans of the Harry Potter movies will recognize Piccadilly Circus as another apparition destination. In the first part of Deathly Hallows, as they are escaping from the Ministry of Magic, Harry, Ron, and Hermione apparate on the crowded streets of Piccadilly Circus, as it was the first thing Hermione thought of. One of London’s most famous tourist attractions has 381,633 tags on Instagram.

5. London Zoo, London

Opened in 1828, ZSL London Zoo is the world’s oldest scientific zoo. The zoo has one of the largest collections in the UK, and its Reptile House was used in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Both its interior and exterior can be seen as Harry and the Dursleys visit it at the beginning of the first movie. London Zoo has been tagged 245,132 times on Instagram.

6. King’s Cross Railway Station, London

Another one of London’s most iconic landmarks on this list, King’s Cross is in sixth place with 122,955 tags. The location was used in the first film, when Hagrid gives Harry his Hogwarts train ticket and when he encounters the Weasleys for the first time as he tries to get to the magical platform. The fans are able to take a picture with the cart already halfway through the wall on its way to Hogwarts Express.

7. Seven Sisters, Sussex

The breathtaking chalk cliffs near Brighton are not only interesting for archeology and history enthusiasts and lovers. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, as the group takes a Portkey to go to the Quidditch World Cup, they land atop the Seven Sisters. The cliffs have 84,016 tags on Instagram.

8. Durham Cathedral, Durham

One of the oldest cathedrals in the UK, Durham Cathedral was the perfect setting for some of the Hogwarts scenes. The cathedral provided the background for the scene in which Harry releases Hedwig on the snow-covered Hogwarts grounds in the first movie, and in the second movie when Ron tries to cast a spell on Malfoy, but it ends up backfiring. The magnificent building has 76,057 tags.

9. Glenfinnan Viaduct, Scottish Highlands

As many fans of the movies know, Hogwarts Express is a real train called the Jacobite, and it runs from Fort William to Mallaig. In the first several movies, there are a couple of memorable scenes involving the Hogwarts Express, where the astonishing scenery steals the spotlight, like in the Philosopher’s Stone when we first see the Hogwarts Express in full steam, or in the second movie where Harry and Ron take an alternate route to Hogwarts. Glenfinnan Viaduct has been tagged 71,275 on Instagram.

10. Malham Cove, North Yorkshire

Malham Cove is a natural limestone rock formation which offers wonderful views of its surrounding area. In the second part of the Deathly Hallows, Malham Cove is where Harry and Hermione camp as they are looking for Horcruxes and hiding from Voldemort. On Instagram, Malham Cove has 63,828 tags.
