Flags play a vital role in representing countries, states, cities, and other political entities. As well as being used for a variety of other purposes such as; signalling, identification and decoration.
You might be able to recognise a flag when you see them on the street or during the world cup, how many would you be able to recreate from memory alone?
In a new study, Preply wanted to find out which flags were the most memorable for everyday people- and the results are shocking! How many can you get right?
Two-thirds of people can’t remember the Spanish flag
Despite Spain being the number one holiday destination for Brits, only 30.4% of participants correctly recalled the Spanish flag perfectly. This is despite being one of the most recognisable football leagues in the world.
Japan has the most memorable flag
Likewise, flags with a simple yet unique design tend to be more memorable than others. The perfect example of this is the Japanese flag, which distinctive design determines that 100% of participants managed to guess it right.
Nobody forgets the United States of America’s flag colours
People are more likely to remember flags that they see frequently, and the United States flag is the perfect example of this. Its constant exposure made it one of the most recognizable flags of the ones surveyed, with 100% of people guessing its colours right and around 90% remembering the layout and the symbol.
Sri Lanka has one of the most intricate colour palettes
The Sri Lankan was ranked as the least memorable flag in terms of colour amongst all countries’ flags analysed. Only 5 people managed to guess it right.
All individuals surveyed guessed the flag colours right for Germany, USA, France, Spain, UK, and Japan. Research has highlighted that red, white and blue are the colours individuals find most memorable.
