National Union of Students Wales response to Children, Young People and Education Senedd Committee’s Mental Health Support in Higher Education Report.

NUS Wales President, Orla Tarn said:

“The mental health challenges facing students are far bigger than what one institution can manage alone, so we welcome the committee’s report recommendation that higher education providers and health services should work together to ensure consistent support across Wales.

“Both the pandemic and now the cost-of-living crisis have had a devastating impact on the mental health of learners, but too many a falling through the cracks when it comes to accessing support.

“Time and time again I’m told about students who are deemed too sick for services within their institutions but not sick enough for the NHS.

“Universities need to work in tandem with NHS services to ensure students get the support they need, when they need it.

“I would urge Welsh Government to listen to the recommendations of this report and implement a national strategy as a matter of urgency.

“A sticking plaster, one size fits all approach simply does not meet the needs of Wales’ diverse higher education students.”
