With a whopping 14.1 billions hashtag views, the fantasy novel Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo is the most popular book on TikTok! The first instalment of a three-part trilogy, the book follows the story of Alina, an orphan with a unique gift who must find her own way in a world of dark magic, extreme wealth and abject poverty. The popularity of both the author and book has seen it turned into a popular Netflix series.

In second place, Heartstopper written by Alice Oseman has accumulated 9.5 billion TikTok hashtag views. The LGBTQ+ graphic novel series explores the lives of two teen boys as they navigate school life, with themes of friendship, love, and loyalty. 

Ranking in third, Normal People by Sally Rooney boasts 6.9 billion hashtag views on TikTok. Rooney’s book follows the story of two teenagers who grow close towards the end of their time at secondary school. The novel explores themes of first love, growing up and dealing with lingering romantic feelings. 

Colleen Hoover claims both fourth and fifth place, with her 2012 novel Slammedgenerating 2.8 billion hashtag views and the widely popular It Ends With Us(2016) bringing in 2.2 billion hashtag views.

With two of her titles reaching the top 10, it’s no surprise that the author has taken the top spot. The author’s first book, ‘Slammed’ is the most popular self published novel to ever be featured by the New York Times! Achieving the #1 New York Times Best Seller list in 2012 has secured her a long career of both self published and traditionally published romance books. 

Coming in with the second highest hashtag views at 1.8 billion is Sarah J. Maas. With her first novel published at 16, Throne of Glass, reaching 9th in the most popular book on TikTok. Selling over 12 million copies of her books, this prodigy is most famous for merging high fantasy and steamy romance. With a total of 15 books published since 2012, all translated into 37 different languages, it’s no surprise she is increasingly popular in the young adult market. 

The third highest viewed author on TikTok is Alice Oseman with 1.2 billion views. Most famous for their ‘Heartstopper’ series which comes in at the 2nd highest viewed book on TikTok. This graphic novel has been turned into a Netflix specialand has received incredibly positive feedback from the LGBTQ+ community and allies. First entering publishing at 17, they are one of the youngest authors on this list, only being beat by Sarah J. Mass. Her debut novel ‘Solitaire’ released in 2017 and since then her works have sold over 4 million copies world wide.
