FFWRNES, LLANELLI WELCOMES
RUSH – A JOYOUS JAMAICAN JOURNEY
2023 sees the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush arriving in Britain and Theatrau Sir Gâr is thrilled to welcome RUSH – A Joyous Jamaican Journey to The Ffwrnes, Llanelli on Saturday 20th May at 7:30pm.
In 1948, hundreds of people from the Caribbean boarded the Empire Windrush and travelled to Tilbury Docks in Essex. With them they brought an explosion of art, dance, music and writing which would transform British culture.
RUSH – A Joyous Jamaican Journey tells the story of reggae music, from the arrival of the Windrush generation from Jamaica – bringing their stories, history, and music with them – to how the sound evolved through the decades to take the world by storm. Audiences will be taken on a whirlwind journey covering the history of Jamaica, slavery, and the Commonwealth through to the racism faced by the Windrush generation when they arrived in the UK.
Narrated by well-known comedian and actor John Simmit, the show features ska, rock steady, calypso, gospel, and lover’s rock, as well as reggae, and is an up-beat celebration of the music of Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff, Toots & The Maytals, Prince Buster, Bob Marley & The Wailers, and Millie Small, amongst others. The JA Reggae Band boasts musicians who have toured with major artists such as Jimmy Cliff, Aswad, UB40, Pato Banton, Edwin Starr and Steel Pulse.
The RUSH Theatre Company brings educational and interactive productions to audiences, through a mixture of visual arts and music from across the world. Their objectives include promoting new writing and plays throughout the community, offering training opportunities, scholarships and providing a wider knowledge and understanding of the positive enriching aspects of a multi -cultural society.
Tickets are on sale and priced at £21.50 (£20.00 with concessions) and can be booked online at www.theatrausirgar.co.uk or with the Box Office on 0345 226 3510
