As wild turkey populations have rebounded over the last quarter-century, thanks largely to hunters’ efforts, an increasing number of people head to the woods each spring in search of a big gobbler. Pursuing turkeys is exciting, and bringing a big bird strutting to the call is one of the most rewarding hunts you can have. But, before you head out into the woods this spring, ensure you have everything you need for a successful hunt. Here’s a checklist to help you bag your bird this year.
1. Camouflage
Turkeys are known for detecting predators long before they approach them. But, unlike a whitetail, you must fool a turkey’s eyes, not its nose. Because turkeys see differently than deer and other big game, good turkey hunting camo is even more important for turkey hunting. Specifically, you will need a shirt, jacket, pants, hat, head net, and gloves. These are necessary items for concealment from the turkeys you intend to hunt.
2. The Right Documentation
The most important thing to have is the appropriate documentation. The specific requirements vary by state because each wildlife agency and DNR operates differently. However, in many cases, this includes a hunting license, habitat stamps, turkey tags, public land stamps, a hunter education card or something similar. Regardless, ensure you have all the necessary documentation and carry it with you while in the field.
3. Turkey Call
While decoys are a nice addition, turkey calls are a must-have, especially if you don’t plan to pattern turkeys and ambush them in known high-usage areas. As a result, selecting at least one turkey call is critical. Having multiple options available is even better.
Choosing which call(s) to answer can be difficult. Diaphragm (mouth) calls are difficult to master. Friction calls are more convenient to use. Box, glass, and slate calls are the most common. Newer hunters may want to experiment with a push-button style call as well.
4. Shotgun
Turkey guns must have tight patterns and sights that allow you to centre your shot in the vitals. Weatherby’s PA-08, which features a durable synthetic stock in Realtree Xtra Green camo, sling studs, dual action bars, and a manoeuvrable 22-inch barrel with full choke, is one of several dedicated turkey guns that are effective and affordable. A clear sight picture is also necessary for accurate shooting, and HIVIZ’s TomBuster II front and rear sights are an effective and inexpensive add-on that will improve your shooting, particularly in low light.
5. Reliable Vision Improvement
Many hunters rely on binoculars to locate their prey as quickly as possible. Fog-proof and scratch-resistant lenses are required for hunting binoculars. Choose models that offer a clear view even in low light.
Stick to lightweight and durable brands with a non-slip and moisture-resistant coating. Tethered lens covers to reduce the likelihood of a misplaced cap.
The rangefinder is another visual aid. Hunters may see their target but cannot determine whether it is within range of their weapon. Hunters should be aware of how accurate their weapon is at various distances.
6. Comfort Investments
Cushions and chairs can make long waits more bearable and increase hunters’ desire to continue hunting. People are kept off the cold ground by lightweight hunting seats. Some have backrests for extra support and comfort.
Some comfort items improve safety as well. Face masks, gloves, and water-resistant clothing and boots can help hunters blend in a while keeping them warm and dry. On cold, wet days, the accessories also protect against hypothermia.
7. Boots
It is critical to have a good pair of boots. Keeping your feet comfortable, dry, warm (and cool) is critical. Lesser boot options may be appropriate for those not covering much ground. However, anyone covering the middle ground, particularly in adverse, wet conditions, should consider investing in a better pair.
8. Backpack and Vests
A tough, water-resistant backpack can help you safely carry all your gear. Those who prefer to travel light should consider investing in a hunting vest.
Hunting vests have numerous pockets for extra ammunition, binoculars, spare socks, and other items.
Some hunting vests include removable cushions for back comfort when leaning against a tree.
The best hunting equipment keeps hunters focused on their goals. Preparation can make any hunting trip more enjoyable, less tiring, and safer. Invest in the following items to improve your chances of success during every turkey season.
9. Flashlight
To get to their blind, many hunters swear by a strict diet of moonlight and woodsmanship. These are frequently the same hunters who insist the stream crossing was “somewhere around here.” Even if you don’t use it all the time, a reliable flashlight or headlamp is a must-have piece of equipment. Many people believe that red or green lights are less likely to frighten turkeys on the roost.’
10. Locator Calls
Most hunters try to locate turkeys on the roost, and using a locator call early in the morning is one of the most effective methods. These natural calls elicit a startled gobble from the birds, allowing
hunters to pinpoint their exact location. A barred owl call, such as H.S. Strut’s Owl Hooter or Knight & Hale’s Magnum Crow, is the most common option. A locator call is an essential component of any turkey vest.
Bottomline
If you’re prepared for the weather, know the local spring and fall hunting laws, and have the appropriate equipment, you’ll be OK in the turkey woods. Purchasing new equipment will improve your comfort and enjoyment of the activity.
In addition to equipment, there is a wealth of information available. The National Wild Turkey Federation has fantastic educational resources for novice and experienced hunters. The NWTF also offers numerous opportunities to participate in wild turkey conservation actively. Check out this organization to get involved or learn more about turkey hunting.
