What All Do You Need for Turkey Hunting?

As wild turkey populations have rebounded over the last quarter-century, thanks largely to hunters’ efforts, an increasing number of people head to the woods each spring in search of a big gobbler. Pursuing turkeys is exciting, and bringing a big bird strutting to the call is one of the most rewarding hunts you can have. But, before you head out into the woods this spring, ensure you have everything you need for a successful hunt. Here’s a checklist to help you bag your bird this year.

1. Camouflage

Turkeys are known for detecting predators long before they approach them. But, unlike a whitetail, you must fool a turkey’s eyes, not its nose. Because turkeys see differently than deer and other big game, good turkey hunting camo is even more important for turkey hunting. Specifically, you will need a shirt, jacket, pants, hat, head net, and gloves. These are necessary items for concealment from the turkeys you intend to hunt.

2. The Right Documentation

The most important thing to have is the appropriate documentation. The specific requirements vary by state because each wildlife agency and DNR operates differently. However, in many cases, this includes a hunting license, habitat stamps, turkey tags, public land stamps, a hunter education card or something similar. Regardless, ensure you have all the necessary documentation and carry it with you while in the field.

3. Turkey Call

While decoys are a nice addition, turkey calls are a must-have, especially if you don’t plan to pattern turkeys and ambush them in known high-usage areas. As a result, selecting at least one turkey call is critical. Having multiple options available is even better.

Choosing which call(s) to answer can be difficult. Diaphragm (mouth) calls are difficult to master. Friction calls are more convenient to use. Box, glass, and slate calls are the most common. Newer hunters may want to experiment with a push-button style call as well.
