Johnston Community School’s Springboard into action

pringboard learners at Johnston Community School have had lots to celebrate recently as their hard work to improve outdoor learning opportunities pays off.

The School now has a beautifully crafted wooden chair for a Bard thanks to last term’s Springboard parents, led by tutor Dave Welton.

The carved storytelling chair celebrates local Welsh history such as Jemima Nicholas, Pentre Ifan, St David’s Cathedral and the Celtic cross at Carew.

Pupils found out more about it at a special unveiling assembly, where Acting Headteacher Ross Williams explored what the carved images represented.

Another improvement for pupils comes in the form of a much needed boardwalk linking a field leased to the school by Pembrokeshire County Council and a woodland area.

Led again by Dave Welton, a group of Springboard learners, together with some amazing volunteers from Cyfle Cymru, learnt how to build a wooden walkway from scratch thanks to a generous donation from the Port of Milford Haven to the Friends of Springboard.

Community Engagement Assistant at the Port of Milford Haven, Lauren Williams said: “The new boardwalk at Johnston School looks fantastic and we were delighted to support the project through our Community Fund.

“The boardwalk will provide great benefits to pupils within the Milford Haven Family of Schools and enable them to enjoy new outdoor learning opportunities.”

Laura Phillips, the Springboard Co-ordinator was absolutely stunned by the beauty of the craftsmanship that each learner had mastered on this course.

She added: “It’s extraordinary what people can achieve when given the opportunity to try something new with the right support, and the right tutor.

“Both Amy Delaney and Dave Welton, the Springboard Advisor and Springboard Tutor who worked on the project, have helped learners create something that will inspire reading at Johnston school for years to come. Everyone should be super proud of themselves.”
