Eurovision Mania: The Song Contest is Most Popular in These Countries

In 1956, the first Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) was held in Switzerland and served as a celebration of peace to unite Europe after World War II. Today, after more than 60 years, the ESC continues to bring the continent together and shift the intercontinental focus from politics to music. Meanwhile, the Eurovision Song Contest is the largest music competition in the world! Every year, a wide variety of artists compete to represent their countries and bring home the legendary glass trophy.

Right in time for this year’s competition, Holidu the holiday rental portal (www.holidu.co.uk) has analysed the Google search queries of the participating countries to find out in which country the contest is most popular! Let’s discover the perfect destinations for those who are fascinated by the Eurovision Song Contest and would like to spend the evening among like-minded people. 1. Spain | Avg. 1,318 monthly searches / 100,000 inhabitants

In first place among the countries where Eurovision is most popular is Spain. With a total monthly average of 625,000 searches in the last 12 months, Spain comes out on top when it comes to the pure popularity of the contest. Although Spain’s last victory was in 1969, the country achieved its best result since 1995 last year with Chanel and her song “SloMo”. This year’s song, which won the national preliminary round “Benidorm Fest”, is also extremely promising according to the bookmakers’ bets. Spanish fans can therefore look forward to a spectacle this year as well.

  1. Sweden | Avg. 900 monthly searches / 100,000 inhabitants

Sweden ranks second place, and it’s no wonder! Sweden achieved its first victory back in 1974 with ABBA and “Waterloo”. Since then, the country has been on the fast track. Not only does the annual preliminary contest “Melodifestivalen” find much favour with international fans, but the country is also the second most successful in the history of the contest with its six victories. In the last decade alone, Sweden won twice with Loreen and “Euphoria” and Måns Zelmerlöw and “Heroes”. Loreen is on stage again for Sweden this year and, according to the current betting odds, has the highest chance of winning the contest and bringing it back to the country in 2024.

This year’s act: Loreen with “Tattoo”

  1. Greece | Avg. 876 monthly searches / 100,000 inhabitants

Greece is in third place! The country is known for its cultural and musical history, which is why the Greek entries often stand out for their traditional sounds. The Eurovision Song Contest is part of the national identity for the Greeks and offers them the chance to translate their rich heritage musically on stage. In 1979, Greece participated in the ESC for the first time and since then it is impossible to imagine life without it. With Helena Papariuou, Greece has even won the competition once before in 2005. Furthermore, the country has always qualified for the finals except twice (2016 and 2018).

This year’s act: Victor Vernicos with “What They Say”

  1. Lithuania | Avg. 839 monthly searches / 100,000 inhabitants

In fourth place among the countries most enthusiastic about the ESC is Lithuania, which has a traditional music scene and shows it off on stage every year. With fourth place, it is far above the other two Baltic states Estonia and Latvia, which landed in 21st and 29th place. One reason for this ranking could be that the Lithuanians are eagerly awaiting their first victory in the competition. Unlike Estonia and Latvia, Lithuania has never been able to take home the winner’s trophy.

This year’s act: Monika Linkytė with “Stay”

  1. United Kingdom | Avg. 820 monthly searches / 100,000 inhabitants

The United Kingdom, this year’s host of the contest, places fifth in the ranking of countries where the Eurovision Song Contest is most popular. After 25 years, the island nation will once again host the music festival in 2023, replacing last year’s winner Ukraine, which is unable to host the contest due to the political situation. After many years of repeatedly finishing at the bottom of the famous scoreboard, last year the United Kingdom achieved its best result since 1998. This means the country is back on track for success for a long time and fans can look forward to a spectacular show in Liverpool, where the competition will be held this year.

This year’s act: Mae Muller with “I Wrote a Song”

  1. Finland  | Avg. 810 monthly searches / 100,000 inhabitants

Finland also found itself in 6th place in our ranking. In 1961, the country took part in the competition for the first time and since then has been delighting fans with innovative and unusual entries. Especially the “metal” genre is often chosen by Finland to impress the international audience. For example, Finland won the contest in 2006 with the eerie metal band Lordi. The contest has a great impact on Finland’s music scene and therefore on the popularity of Finnish artists. This year’s artist Käärijä also enjoys great popularity and combines elements of Finnish rap as well as techno in his extraordinary song.

This year’s act: Käärijä with “Cha Cha Cha”

  1. Italy | Avg. 701 monthly searches / 100,000 inhabitants

Not only is the ESC itself extremely popular in Italy, but the national preliminary competition “Sanremo” in particular is known throughout the country and takes place over several evenings. This festival was held in Italy even before the first ESC and served as an inspiration for the organization of the Eurovision Song Contest. It is therefore hardly surprising that Italy plays a major role in the ESC. After a 13-year hiatus, Italy returned to the contest in 2011 and has since celebrated several triumphs. The highlight in this regard was the victory of the world-renowned band Måneskin in Rotterdam 2021, after which the competition was held in Turin last year.

This year’s act: Marco Mengoni with “Due vite”

  1. Norway | Avg. 669 monthly searches / 100,000 inhabitants

Norway reaches 8th place in the list of countries that show the most interest in the ESC. After Sweden and Finland, this is another Scandinavian country in the top 10. Since 1960, the country has regularly participated in the competition and has already recorded three wins – the most recent in 2009 with Alexander Rybak and his song “Fairytale”. Norway has repeatedly achieved high rankings in recent years and, for example, won the most viewer votes in 2019 with KEiiNO’s entry “Spirit in the Sky.” In doing so, Norway successfully combined traditional Nordic sounds with contemporary pop. This year’s song by singer Alessandra also has a mystical, Nordic sound and is extremely popular in her home country.

This year’s act: Alessandra with “Queen of Kings”

  1. Ireland | Avg. 643 monthly searches / 100,000 inhabitants

Ireland has also made it into the ranking of the ESC most enthusiastic countries and occupies 9th place. The island state has already won the competition seven times, more than any other country. Three of these victories even took place in consecutive years (1992,1993 and 1994). However, Ireland’s last victory was more than 25 years ago, so the country’s success rate has been rather mixed over the past decade. Nevertheless, many Irish people continue to take an interest in the competition and cheer every year when it comes to qualifying for the finals. Perhaps this year’s artists, the band Wild Youth, can achieve a better result for Ireland.

  1. The Netherlands | Avg. 520 monthly searches / 100,000 inhabitants

The tail end of the Top 10 is the Netherlands, which participated in the very first ESC back in 1956 and has already won five times. The most recent victory was achieved by singer Duncan Lawrence with his song “Arcade”. After being eliminated in the semifinals eight times in a row before 2013, the Netherlands achieved above-average results in the last ten years, giving their fans reason to celebrate.

This year’s act: Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper with “Burning Daylight”
