- Research from SkyParkSecure looked at some of the most popular and trending destinations for 2023 and scored their hostels on a number of factors.
- Not only did they reveal the overall best destinations for hostel travel, but which locations are the best if you’re working aboard, travelling with family or on a tight budget, and even the best destinations if you’re after a slightly more luxurious hostel stay.
For a long time, hostels have been viewed as only being suitable for backpackers – however, with many hostels now offering amenities as great as your regular hotels, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Travel experts SkyParkSecure want to show holiday-goers that whilst hostels can be a great budget destination, they’re also great options for families, digital nomads and partiers.
Looking at TripAdvisor’s most popular and trending destination for 2023, we ranked each on a number of factors such as how many ‘budget hostels’ they had, how many hostels had free WiFi and how many had bars and lounges.

Siem Reap and Playa Del Carmen take the top spots for best destinations for hostels
An already incredibly popular hotspot for travellers, Cambodia’s Siem Reap was the top scorer, with 65% of its hostels being classed as 4-star and above, and 57% have air conditioning too!
Following is Playa Del Carmen in Mexico; whilst Mexico is known for its luxury hotels – it’s also a great location for hostel travel, with Cancun finding itself in third place too.
Playa Del Carmen scored highly due to 75% of their hostels being marked as ‘budget’ hostels, making them the perfect option if you’d want to be able to take in Mexico’s wonders without breaking the bank.
Both Siem Reap and Playa Del Carmen are already popular amongst travellers, with searches for ‘Siem Reap hostel’ increasing by 140% over the last year and searches for ‘Playa del Carmen’ hostel increasing by 122%
The best hostel destinations for remote workers
Hybrid working has provided many of us with the opportunity to earn money and travel the world simultaneously, and now many hostels are equipped to ensure you can save money whilst working abroad.
New Delhi was revealed to be the best hostel location for remote workers, with 92% of the hostels having free WiFi and 17% having their own business centre! New York City followed – with 83% of hostels having free WiFi and 17% having a business centre.
Whilst it isn’t technically ‘abroad’, Edinburgh was also revealed to be a great option for remote workers, 73% of hostels have free WiFi – and whilst none have a business centre, 47% do have a bar or lounge you could likely work from.
The best hostel destinations for budget travellers
It’s well known that hostels are one of the most cost-effective ways of seeing the world, but which destination is the best if you are travelling on a strict budget?
Edinburgh was revealed the be one of the best hostels for budget travellers, with a huge 93% of their hostels being marked as ‘budget’, whilst New York again scored highly, with 83% being marked as budget.
