During the early hours of 4 April, PC Amy Sutton and Special Constable Olivia Lester came across a man threatening to jump off a bridge in Bridgend town centre. Whilst officers were trying to engage with the man, he climbed over the wrong side of the railings and showed an intent to jump.

Amy and Olivia acted quickly by taking hold of the man who then proceeded to struggle and make attempts to jump to the river below whilst shouting at them to ‘let him go’. At one point the man was completely suspended from the bridge. He was being held up by his arms by Amy and Olivia which took considerable strength and energy.

Throughout this time both officers used their radios to provide excellent communication which allowed additional officers to locate and assist them quickly to pull the man over the railings to safety.

Chief Inspector Rob Miles commented, “I am immensely proud of PC Amy Sutton and Special Constable Olivia Lester.

There is no doubt in my mind that had it not been for their timely and heroic intervention, the man would have succeeded in jumping from the bridge which would have likely resulted in significant injury or death. Thanks to the outstanding bravery and professionalism shown by Amy and Olivia, a vulnerable person’s life has been saved and he is now in a place of safety.”
