A simple Tesco grant application from an Action for Children children’s home near Rhyl has resulted in a £10,000 reflective platform tree house for children and staff to enjoy.  The platform has been sympathetically constructed in existing trees on the site and offers views across the mountains south and west of the home.

Caroline Morris, registered manager at the home, said: ‘I initially applied for the standard Tesco £500 community grant and thought no more about it.  A few weeks later we received the wonderful news that we had had been awarded £10,000 with the stipulation it was used for outdoors purposes.

‘We are passionate about the outdoors at the home and given the beautiful rural setting, we decided on a reflective platform tree house.  It has had an immediate positive impact on the children and staff, and we are absolutely delighted with it.  I can’t thank Tesco enough for their brilliant and generous gesture that makes the lives of our children here better.’

Action for Children’s homes in North Wales welcome children and young people aged nine to 18 years. This can be for several months or years, depending on what the child needs.  The homes work with local authorities across North Wales and are recognised for their innovative approach and excellent outcomes for children.

Team leader, Wynne Randles added: ‘It’s already worth its weight in gold.  We had a new young person settle in with us recently and rather than do the getting to know you stuff in the office, which can be boring for the young person, we did it up in the tree house and it was great.  We also have a keen birdwatcher with us and she can be up on the platform for hours with staff watching the abundant birdlife in the countryside.  It really brings the best of our young people and staff.’
