A beginner’s guide to Roulette

When it comes to signing up for any online casino platform, you’ll more than likely want to try out the classics, such as Roulette, Blackjack and Poker, as well as some of the many Slots available.

With this in mind, we wanted to give you a quick beginner’s guide to one of the classics – Roulette – so the next time you decide to log in to an online casino site, you’ll have a better understanding of how to play Roulette.

Are you ready to meet the iconic wheel?

What is Roulette?

Roulette is essentially a game of prediction – can you or any other player around the iconic wheel, correctly predict where the small ball will land by the end of the game?

A game of Roulette only consists of a few things – a Roulette wheel, a Roulette table, a small ball, a dolly (also known as a placeholder), a few betting chips and a dealer (who is also referred to as a croupier).

How do you play Roulette?

To play Roulette, whether that be online or in person down at your local casino establishment, you’ll first need to decide how much you’re willing to potentially lose by playing.

When you have a figure in your head or a limit set on your online account, you can then proceed with the game, to decide the value of the betting chip(s) you’ll be placing within each game you play.

The betting window of a game will then be declared open by the dealer. Once all bets are placed, or enough time has passed that the dealer closes the window, no further bets can be made and the game will begin.

To start, the dealer will spin the wheel. Shortly after spinning the wheel, the small ball will be added to the game, but in the opposite direction of the wheel. Adding the ball in the opposite direction allows for two things to occur – the iconic bouncing noise to ring in the player’s ears, but also for the game to be kept fair and unbiased.

Only once the wheel has come to a complete stop, will the winning wheel compartment be announced by the dealer. To mark where the ball has landed, the dealer will also add the dolly to the table layout, showcasing where the ball landed.

Any player that correctly guessed where the ball would land will be awarded their winnings. The table will then be swept of betting chips, clearing the table ready for a new game to begin.

Bet types to place in a game of Roulette

There are multiple ways you can place a bet to show your predicted outcome of the game, including:

  • Straight Up – This is an inside bet type, that focuses on one bet being placed on a single number. So, whether you have a favourite number, a lucky number or even if you want to place a bet on your birthday number, to place a straight up bet, you simply need to place a betting chip(s) inside the box that contains your desired number. The betting odds attached to this bet are 35:1.
  • Red – This is an outside bet type, that focuses on the colour of the wheel pocket, rather than the number. Just under half of the wheel contains red pockets, so you have a just below 50% chance of predicting correctly, but it isn’t guaranteed. The betting odds attached to this bet is 1:1.

Now that you know what to expect when stepping up to the Roulette table, will you be spinning the iconic wheel anytime soon?
