Senedd Member Joyce Watson visited Ysgol Tycroes on Friday (9 June) to learn about the school’s award-winning garden project.

The Amman Valley school last month won a prestigious nature prize worth £1,000 for their plans to produce food, boost biodiversity and take climate action.

Following the visit, the Labour Mid and West Wales MS said:

“I was delighted to chat with pupils and staff about the project and see the work already underway.

“The children were very knowledgeable, articulate and enthusiastic – an absolute credit to the school. They have been busy researching and designing the scheme and are enjoying getting their hands dirty.

“The campaign has encouraged them to make environmentally aware personal choices, too, they said. Hopefully, that is something they will take home and into the community.

“I am looking forward to seeing the plans realised and watching the garden grow.”

Ysgol Tycroes was one of only two schools in Wales to be awarded this year’s OVO Foundation Nature Prize. Nearly 200 schools across the UK competed, with 25 winning funding.

The scheme is run by the Let’s Go Zero campaign, which is supporting UK schools to enhance wildlife and become zero carbon by 2030.

Over the coming months, the Let’s Go Zero website will share insights and updates from the winning schools as they bring their projects to life.
