Searching for safety: the UK’s most searched for home security products revealed.

As more and more homes around the country become ‘smart homes’, it’s not just lighting,

sound and entertainment systems that are being integrated. Home security has also seen a transformation, with the traditional burglar alarm now becoming part of a much wider system for many, combining security cameras, motion sensors and doorbells to help protect homeowners and allow them to take their safety into their own hands.

With this in mind, home security specialist SimpliSafe investigated keyword data to see

which home security products are the most searched for in the UK. This research was not

conducted just to see which products are the most popular, but also to see which products

could become staples of every home in the future.

Let’s dive into the findings.

By far the most popular home security item, seeing monthly average searches of 16,550, is the video doorbell. Video doorbells have seen themselves become part of countless home automation setups, with many smart-home providers having video doorbells as part of their repertoire. Considering the popularity of online shopping and people waiting for parcels throughout the day, it’s not surprising that video doorbells are leading the pack. Being able to immediately see exactly who is at your door whether you’re home or away is beneficial from a safety perspective, but also extremely convenient. All in all, it’s a great piece of a home security kit and understandably the nation’s favourite!

Coming in second with 12,400 average searches is a piece of kit absolutely essential to any good home security setup – home security cameras. These are one of the first things you think of when wanting to get your system started at home, and for obvious reasons. The move towards smart technology has made cameras more effective than ever, placing them anywhere and everywhere around your home and being able to access them with a tap of an app.

Looking at the data for specific types of cameras, outdoor security cameras see an average

of 6,850 searches a month, while indoor security cameras see 2,000. Outdoor security

cameras have the advantage of being able to survey the outside of your property and act as a great deterrent measure against crimes like car theft and vandalism, as well as allowing you to keep an eye on any suspicious activity that may be of concern. Indoor cameras on the other hand can be a great tool in the worst case scenario of you having intruders in your home, as well as keeping an eye on pets and making sure the kids are home from school on time.

With 10,700 searches, the third most searched for bit of kit are security lights. A potential

intruder may see it as being off-putting if a spotlight were to be shone directly on them for all to see. So seeing lights with a high search volume is hardly surprising.

The vast majority of security lights available are motion activated, complimenting any smart-home security setup with outdoor cameras or video doorbells – helping you to see exactly who’s on the other side of your door. Many also offer options to customise the sensor sensitivity, preventing them being triggered by animals such as cats and foxes so you’re not annoying your neighbours and also saving some power.

The next most popular search term is “home security systems”, with average monthly

searches of 7,150. Usually consisting of an outdoor siren/bell box, sensors, camera and hub, home security systems range from sets offering complete coverage and protection.

With the importance of home security, it has developed from your traditional locks to

comprehensive smart technology that you can control via an app and have the option of

professional monitoring, all to contribute to providing you with peace of mind whilst in the

comfort of your home.

Taking the fifth spot on our list is window locks. Seeing 5,800 average searches and beating products such as motion sensors, window locks are great examples of how all-round security is becoming more of a priority.

From people replacing current locks with ones that offer more protection to adding on

additional measures for an extra layer of safety, windows are rightfully viewed as one of the more vulnerable targets burglars may use to break in, so it’s only natural that we would want  to do what we can to prevent that.
