After the UK was hit with Thunderstorms this weekend, the met office has warned this won’t be the last of it. International Drivers Association’s expert has warned drivers to check their cars this morning.
- Animal Intrusion: During storms, animal seek shelter and may find their way into parked vehicles through under the engine, vents, or damaged areas. Especially cats taking shelter in the engine, drivers are warned to check before they get in their cars.
- Lightning Strikes: If a lightning bolt directly strikes a vehicle, it can cause damage. The electrical current from a lightning strike can potentially disable electronic systems, damage the vehicle’s electrical components, including breaking systems, without knowing. Check your vehicle ahead of any journeys today.
- Flooding: If the thunderstorm results in heavy rainfall and the area where the car is parked is prone to flooding, there is a risk of water damage. Flooding can affect the engine, electrical systems, and interior components of the vehicle. It’s important to avoid parking in low-lying areas prone to flooding during or after a thunderstorm.
As well as checking your vehicle is safe ahead of any journey, drivers are also warned of driving into heavily flooded areas, as most of the time, your insurance will not be covered, and drivers will be liable for any damages.
If you park in a street that’s prone to flooding, you may also be at risk of your car insurance being void, so its important to check your policy.

It’s important to inspect your car thoroughly after a storm, even if no immediate damage is apparent. Look for signs of water ingress, exterior damage, or any unusual smells or sounds. If you suspect any issues, it’s advisable to have your car inspected by a qualified mechanic or body shop to assess and address potential problems promptly.
