Jon Robson, CEO & founder of Mamedica, discusses how cannabis-based prescriptions are changing the lives of thousands across the UK

This week marks World Wellbeing Week, a period dedicated to raising awareness around improving our health in all areas of our lives. Amidst the cost-of-living crisis, and as the hot weather continues, some aspects of our health can become harder to manage such as insomnia, bodily pain and allergies. Now with over 1-in-5 Brits using the product at least once a day, CBD – also known as cannabidiol – has become the new essential to incorporate into your wellness routine for the summer, due to a range of therapeutic benefits and holistic applications. In light of this, Jon Robson, CEO and founder of the UK’s leading medical cannabis clinic, Mamedica, comments on the benefits of incorporating CBD into your wellness journey.

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second most prevalent ingredient in cannabis derived from the hemp flower. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in cannabis, CBD does not produce a ‘high’ that is commonly associated with marijuana products. CBD has been touted for a wide variety of health issues, with some of the strongest scientific evidence for its effectiveness in aiding with symptoms common in anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain. The benefits of CBD are largely derived from its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is a complex neurochemical network in the body that regulates various bodily functions, including emotions, pain and sleep.

Insomnia and low mood:

Research has shown that the warmer season impacts our sleeping patterns as rates of insomnia rise during the summer months. Due to the lighter nights, our circadian rhythms, or the body’s internal clock, get disrupted. A recent poll by sleepcouncil.org found that as many as 52% of people in the UK believe the temperature prevents them from being able to get to sleep. As a result, a lack of sleep negatively impacts mood, causing increased feelings of grogginess and poor mood.

Studies on CBD have shown that it can help with stress and anxiety relief, consequently, promoting better sleep. CBD works with the body’s endocannabinoid system, helping to reduce the symptoms associated with anxiety and increase relaxation. For the sleepless Brits who might not want to resort to strong, prescription medications, CBD could well be the solution to get a good night’s sleep. This comes as Mamedica’s data shows that a staggering 51% of Brits say that they find it hard to sleep at night but do not want to use prescription medication.

Allergies:

Along with brighter days, summer also comes allergies. Research has found that around a fifth of the UK population, (20%) suffer from hay fever. CBD has anti-inflammatory properties which are known to help with symptoms. CBD can aid in easing nasal pressure, opening airways to ease breathing and relieving congestion due to its immunosuppressant effects.

Pain relief:

It comes as no surprise that we spend more time outdoors, taking part in more physical activities in the warmer months. However, what can result is increased joint pain, muscle ache and fatigue. CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties can ease pain, itchiness and soreness making it an effective remedy to bring along to all excursions.

This comes as Mamedica’s study identified that 73% of Brits have accepted physical pain and discomfort as the norm for themselves, however turning to clinics like Mamedica that can offer a solution for your chronic pain is essential to ensure you can still have the summer you want.

Libido:

CBD has been shown to improve libido by increasing blood flow to the sexual organs and triggering the part of the brain that controls sexual arousal. This increases sex drive and regulates libido for both men and women. Some may find this to simply improve confidence and for others, it may be a biological aid, regardless, cannabis-based medicines are lifestyle friendly.

Jon Robson, CEO and founder of Mamedica says:

“CBD can be ingested in various ways – through an oil or CBD-infused liquids, a vaporiser or orally. A specialist would be able to determine the most suitable method depending on the strength, how it’s administered and personal health factors.

“Specialist doctors at MAMEDICA prescribe CBD in the form of vaporisable flower or sublingual oil, especially for patients in psychiatry. Alternatively, CBD is widely available without prescription in various forms such as vape cartridges, gel capsules, gummies, lotions/creams and balms.

“Generally speaking, whilst the majority of our clients are looking for symptom relief for chronic pain conditions, we are increasingly seeing more and more patients enquire for psychiatric treatment. Medical cannabis can assist in regulating the body’s endocannabinoid system, a system in the body which predates so many systems we already have, which works with processing emotions such as fear, pain, stress, and anxiety. It has been proven how CBD and low doses of THC can help alleviate the sense of dread and worry associated with anxiety for patients and deliver a general improvement in wellbeing and happiness.

“All products released to be prescribed in the UK have to undergo rigorous testing. Within that testing process, you are able to identify exactly what’s in that particular cannabis strain or a particular vape cartridge, in terms of THC, CBD and terpenes.

“Our service offers unrestricted access to the widest range of cannabis-based prescription medicines available in the UK, and our healthcare model has been designed to deliver the fastest speed of service, from initial consultation to the patient receiving their prescription.”
