St John Ambulance Cymru are celebrating the hard work and dedication of paramedics across Wales this Paramedics Day. As Wales’ leading first aid charity, paramedics play a vital role in St John Ambulance Cymru’s work, helping to enhance the health and wellbeing of people across the country.
The charity relies on thousands of committed volunteers to help keep the public safe. These individuals give up endless hours of their free time to protect the public at key events in the community. St John Ambulance Cymru volunteers are there for the people of Wales when they need it most, providing first aid cover at events or through a range of healthcare services.
For many individuals, like volunteer paramedic Beth, joining the organisation was a key driver in pursuing her career in healthcare. Beth said, “I’ve been a member of St John Ambulance Cymru for 21 years and I can honestly say that without it, I wouldn’t be in my chosen career. It has given me the confidence, skills and passion to help people and it’s these attributes that led me to being a paramedic. Even now, having been qualified as a paramedic for some time, St John Ambulance Cymru continues to assist in the shaping of my career.”
“I remember having a lot of excellent clinicians to look up to as I grew up through St John” she says. “It is a great place for shared learning and inspiring others. It has been brilliant for those in clinical careers or for those wanting to progress into those lines of work. The volunteering experience within St John Ambulance Cymru is unique and the fact that it starts as a child is very special.”
To celebrate Paramedics Day, the charity are holding a thanksgiving service alongside the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust at St John the Baptist Church in Cardiff. The service will give thanks to paramedics in Wales and the rest of the World, highlighting their invaluable work in society.
Not only can volunteering teach you lifesaving first aid skills which can help when pursuing a career in the medical field, but it can also introduce you to a range of likeminded people. To find out more about volunteering with St John Ambulance Cymru, please visit www.sjacymru.org.uk.
