St John Ambulance Cymru volunteers assisted a member of the public in saving a life this week, as a concert-goer went into cardiac arrest at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod . A perfect example of why the charity is celebrating the lifesaving work paramedics across Wales this Paramedics Day.
On the evening of Tuesday 4th July, following a concert at the music festival, the individual collapsed in the car park, suffering a cardiac arrest. Luckily, a member of the public was close by, who promptly brought the closest defibrillator to the scene and commenced CPR.
The member of the public attached the defibrillator, shocking the patient a number of times. It was then that two volunteer paramedics, an ambulance crew and an Operational Commander volunteering with St John Ambulance Cymru arrived on the scene.
A return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) was achieved meaning the patient became conscious again. He was handed over to the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, who safely transported him to the Wrexham Maelor hospital.
St John Ambulance Cymru’s Head of Community Operations, Darren Murray said: “We are proud of the volunteers who responded quickly and delivered a high standard of care synonymous with St John Ambulance Cymru. We wish the patient our very best wishes in their recovery.”
The event is a pertinent reminder of how valuable paramedics are in our communities. St John Ambulance Cymru are especially celebrating their volunteer paramedics this Paramedics Day, like those at the scene on Tuesday, who give up their time to keep the public safe at key events across Wales.
The patient is safely recovering in hospital, thanks to the swift action of the member of the public and St John Ambulance Cymru volunteers.
This Paramedics Day, St John Ambulance Cymru and the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust are holding a thanksgiving service at St John the Baptist Church in Cardiff.
