Studies [1] have shown that over one in four couples that recently got engaged or married met online. These insights also revealed that marriages from dating apps may be less likely to end in divorce.

However, meeting a potential partner online can be easier said than done. With technological advances such as AI making its way into the mainstream, Mecca Games has conducted an experiment[2] to reveal if AI is the way forward for single people looking to find the love of their life online.

Women care more about what a dating bio says than what men do

Profile of bio author Percentage of ‘yes’ swipes
AI-Generated male 36%
Human-generated male 64%
AI-generated female 46%
Human-generated female 54%

Using dating profiles contributed by volunteers, Mecca Games challenged AI to write a desirable dating bio and compared its success with real life profiles.

The study revealed that females were 78% more likely to swipe right on a human-generated dating bio compared to an AI-written bio, meaning the pronounced difference between the two bios had a huge impact on the female’s decision.

However, males were only 17% more likely to swipe right on a human-generated bio compared to AI, suggesting that males aren’t as invested into what a dating profile says.

Commenting on the findings, Relationship Coach and Systemic Psychotherapist, Alex Limanowka said:

“One of the most crucial aspects of preparing for online dating is creating a profile on the application, which involves selecting the right photos and crafting a captivating bio. It’s important to remember that we have limited space to showcase ourselves on these platforms, so we must put in the effort to present a unique and attractive overall picture that resonates with potential matches.

As AI continues to revolutionize various industries and assist us in both personal and professional tasks, the impact of AI on dating habits has become a topic of discussion among relationship experts. Particularly, the use of AI to generate bios and edit pictures posted on dating apps has drawn considerable attention.

An analysis of the data reveals a noticeable difference between genders: human-generated dating bios are 78% more likely to attract a woman’s interest to swipe right, whereas they are only 17% more likely to have the same effect on men compared to AI-written bios. This gender disparity suggests that men often rely more on photos and may swipe right without reading the woman’s profile. On the other hand, women tend to be more selective, paying attention to both photos and bios before deciding to swipe right or left.

Looking specifically at the content within the bio, it becomes evident that a unique and engaging description leads to more swipes. Simply giving the AI a generic prompt like “prepare a dating bio for a 35-year-old single girl from London who is spontaneous and enjoys cooking (max 500 words)” will yield matching descriptions, even if the hobbies are altered to sport and traveling. This lack of uniqueness is a significant downside of using AI to craft bios, as users of dating apps are drawn to distinctive personalities. Ice-breaking comments or conversation starters in the bio work effectively on dating apps, and the combination of phrases we use reflects our uniqueness, allowing potential matches to learn more about us. AI might produce perfectly correct descriptions, but it cannot capture the essence of human uniqueness, which is the most intriguing and appealing aspect of meeting someone new.

While AI indeed offers numerous advantages, relying solely on it for dating might not be ideal. To build a healthy and fulfilling relationship, a “good” match is essential. This requires deep self-awareness, understanding our mental health, life goals, expectations, and boundaries. Opening up and showing vulnerability while being unapologetically ourselves are key elements of genuine connections. At present, AI lacks the capability to grasp this level of human understanding, which is why it is crucial for us to approach our dating lives personally and present ourselves authentically.”
