The safest UK areas for pedestrians
- The Rutland area is the safest area in the UK for Pedestrians, with only 2.38% of road accidents involving them
- Powys and Carmarthenshire take second and third, respectively
New research has revealed the safest UK areas for pedestrians, with Rutland coming out on top.
The study by personal injury experts Claims.co.uk analysed the latest data from the Office For National Statistics on road collision statistics to see which areas had the lowest percentage of collisions involving pedestrians on average each year.
It found that Rutland is the safest area in the UK for pedestrians. Between 2012 and 2021, there were, on average, 56 collisions a month in total, with just 1, or 2.38, of these involving pedestrians, which is the second lowest of any area in the UK. Statistically, 2016 and 2018 were the safest years for pedestrians, with no recorded collisions involving them that year.
The Welsh area of Powys comes in second place on the list. 303 collisions occurred in the area on average each year between 2012 and 2021, with just 11, or 3.30%, of these involving pedestrians. 2020 was statistically the safest year for pedestrians in the area, with just 1.07% of collisions involving them.
Coming in third place is another Welsh area in Carmarthenshire. On average, there have been 316 collisions each year between 2012 and 2021. It was found that 15, or 4.79%, of these involved pedestrians. 2019 was the safest year for pedestrians, with just 3.31% of collisions involving them.
The Scottish Borders area ranks fourth on the list, with 8 collisions each year involving pedestrians on average, which is 4.81% of the 164 total collisions each year in the area. The area’s safest year for pedestrians was 2017, with 1.16% of all collisions involving them that year.
Rounding out the top five is West Berkshire, which comes in with 5.18%, or 10, of the 206 collisions on average each year between 2012 and 2021 involving pedestrians. Statistically, the area’s safest year for pedestrians was 2013, with 5.22% of collisions involving them.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for Claims.co.uk said: “While some areas in the UK may have a considerably large amount of collisions involving cars, it’s interesting to also where the hotspots for pedestrian collisions are as well. It’s essential to see this information nowadays too, with many cities turning more and more walkable with time, and this list highlights potentially where work needs to be done.”
