Dear Editor

The sensible way forward

Until nuclear fusion becomes a commercial reality the Government should be pursuing efficient CCGT gas-fired power stations and fracking, complemented with Orbital Power Stations (OPS), and where appropriate hydro and tidal generation. It is a dereliction of duty and totally irresponsible for Government to be embracing weather dependent large scale wind and terrestrial solar farms – it is appalling that in the 21st Century Government Ministers are so technically ignorant and inept! The limitations of weather dependent electricity generation are clear for all to see, and the premature forcing EVs and heat pumps on a very reluctant public is diabolical!

Our advanced modern technological society demands a reliable and secure power supply, or it will collapse – this is an uncomfortable fact, and not scare mongering – everything from the Internet, petrol stations, banks, to supermarkets will cease to function if the Grid fails.

How many readers are aware, or even understand, that the UK Government has ordered research into a multi-billion pound solar satellite project to match a nuclear power station’s output. The CASSIOPeiA Project (CASSIOPeiA stands for, Constant Aperture, Solid-State, Integrated, Orbital Phased Array) is expected to cost between £10 billion – £15 billion with potentially generating in the region of 2000 MW (2 GW) of power.

To put this in context the latest cost for Hinkley Point Nuclear Fission Power Station is currently in the region of £23 billion. Unbelievably the plant is situated on a shoreline which experiences the second highest tidal range on the planet, and which has succumbed to serious flooding in the past. This nuclear plant will produce 3200 MW, but for its cost, two space projects could be built and would have a capacity in the region of 4000 MW without the dangerous and horrendous expensive problems associated with nuclear fission.

For further insights I would recommend my latest book, ‘All Smoke and Mirrors’ and no doubt readers will find it a revealing and fascinating read, not that government or the power companies will relish the book.
