Dear Editor,
We learn from the Welsh Press  that hydrogen-fuelled  public transport buses are being trialled for the first time in Bridgend. We are also told that buses “will run on locallysourced GREEN HYDROGEN from Port Talbot , on routes around the town.” The hydrogen provider is called Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions. It is “being supported by Marubeni Europower, the renewable energy developer behind proposals for a £31 million green hydrogen facility in Bridgend.”
It’s amazing how many companies are now trying to cash in on  SUPPOSED “green energy” !  However, dear reader, if you want  energy FACTS, just peruse www.gridwatch.co.uk which records all the energy sources of the UK National Grid .
It informs us  that in August 2023 ,the whole UK used a maximum of 33.7GW and an average  of 26.2GW  electricity at any one time. Of this , UK wind energy contributed  an average of 5.1 GW and an infinitesimal minimum of 0.071GW ! With tiny wind energy figures like this to supply  the whole 68 million people of the UK, how is it that  this company can produce enough “GREEN HYDROGEN” from renewable sources  in Bridgend to run a hydrogen-powered bus service?
Most “green electricity generated in the UK enters the National Grid , where it mixes with the far, far  greater regular supply from  fossil fuel power stations. So, if the truth be told, it is fossil fuel energy that will produce the vast bulk of hydrogen at Bridgend…..not trivial “green energy”. So where is the “green gain” in that How is it even “green”?  We just as well use diesel buses !! This looks like yet another green scam !
Is “Hyppo” short for “Hypothetical” or “Hypocritical”……..or both?
Yours faithfully,
L J Jenkins,
