Even at this early stage of the season, there are some games that feel like they carry great significance for how the campaign will pan out. It’s fair to say that Nottingham Forest’s upcoming clash with Burnley falls into that category.

On one hand, it’s a chance for Forest to continue their strong start to the campaign, and pick up a third win in five matches. On the other, Burnley are under real pressure to register their first point of the season, having lost three on the spin.

The Forest v Burnley betting odds are tight, but let’s take a look back at some recent meetings between the two sides to give an indication as to what we can expect.

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Burnley, November 2013

We start with this Championship clash between the sides in the autumn of November 2013, where the spoils were shared at the City Ground.

A Sam Vokes penalty gave the visitors the lead midway through the first half, but Simon Cox was on hand to equalise for Forest shortly before the break. Neither side could find a winner, as the home side held then-league leaders Burnley to a draw.

Burnley 3-1 Nottingham Forest, February 2014

A few months later, the two sides locked horns once again. At this stage, Burnley were well on their way towards promotion to the Premier League, and they registered a comfortable win over Forest at Turf Moor.

Scott Arfield got Burnley off the perfect start, and after 35 minutes, the home side were 3-0 up thanks to a brace from Vokes. Djamal Abdoun’s 80th-minute strike was a mere consolation, as Burnley’s fine home form continued.

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Burnley, October 2015

Sean Dyche’s Burnley would suffer relegation from the Premier League in the 2014-15 season, meaning that in October 2015, their head-to-head with Nottingham Forest was resumed. Again, it ended in a 1-1 draw at the City Ground.

Forest thought they had nabbed a winner when Eric Lichaj popped up in the 73rd minute to give the home side the lead, but Burnley had other plans, as Matt Taylor’s dramatic 90th-minute equaliser meant the spoils were shared.

Burnley 1-0 Nottingham Forest, February 2016

The following February, Burnley were once again in line for promotion, and the visit of Forest to Turf Moor proved a stern test for Dyche and co.

There was little to separate the sides in the early stages of the match, but the all-important winner came on 68 minutes as Vokes struck to earn a vital three points for Burnley.

Nottingham Forest 0-1 Burnley, August 2023

Fast forward more than seven years, and the two sides are now Premier League clubs, and will lock horns in the Premier League on Monday night. It’ll be the first meeting between the two sides in the top flight since February 1971.

Interestingly, the two teams were drawn together in the second round of the EFL Cup a few weeks ago, where Burnley earned a 1-0 win at the City Ground.

Zeki Amdouni’s late winner made all the difference, and Vincent Kompany will be hoping his side can come away with a similar result on Monday.
