New data reveals the least thrill-seeking areas in the U.K.
- Winchester has been named the area with the least amount of thrill seekers, with 7,965 online monthly searches per 100,000 residents. Canterbury, St Albans, Croydon and Wakefield round out the top five.
- The research analysed online searches for adrenaline-related terms sorted into categories, such as ‘bungee jumping’ in ‘extreme sports’, to determine the areas with the most adrenaline seekers.
- The lottery, with an average monthly search volume of 4,979,974 in the last 12 months, is the most popular category nationwide.
New data has named the top ten U.K. areas with the lowest number of adrenaline seekers.
The research, conducted by online casino Luck.com, analysed average monthly searches for adrenaline-related terms in each area, compared to its population. The study then revealed the number of searches per 100,000 residents, including but not limited to terms such as ‘hang gliding’ and ‘postcode lottery’. These terms were sorted into categories, including ‘extreme sports’ and the ‘lottery’, to reveal the top ten least daredevil areas and their most searched-for categories.
Winchester is named the least thrill-seeking area. The city has searched for adrenaline-related terms less than any other area, totalling 10,188 times in the last 12 months and 7,965 per 100,000 residents. In Winchester, residents search for lottery-related terms the most, with ‘lotto’ representing 2,492 average monthly searches.
Canterbury receives a silver medal as the second least thrill-seeking area. In the historic town, residents search for adrenaline-related terms 12,580 times per month, equating to 8,036 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. ‘Varied’ activities are the second most popular category, including ‘axe throwing’ and ‘indoor skydiving’.
St Albans is the third area with the least adrenaline seekers. In the district, residents search for adrenaline-fuelled terms 12,024 times per month, averaging 8,089 per 100,000 residents. ‘Travel’ ranks as the third most popular category, including terms such as ‘interrailing’ and ‘camping near me’, with 2,171 average monthly searches.
The London borough of Croydon comes next as the fourth least thrill-seeking area. There are 41,398 average monthly searches for adrenaline-related terms, and therefore 10,743 per 100,000 residents. The fourth most popular category is ‘extreme sports’, including terms such as ‘rock climbing’ and ‘paragliding’; ‘mountain biking’, with 1,649 average monthly searches.
The fifth least thrill-seeking area is Wakefield. In the cathedral city, there are 40,525 average monthly searches for adrenaline-fuelled terms, equating to 11,454 per 100,000 residents. ‘Lottery’, with a total of 35,097 monthly searches, is the most popular category in the area.
Oxford ranks sixth, with 17,8823 average monthly searches for adrenaline-fuelled terms, equating to 11,730 per 100,000 residents. Lancaster ranks seventh with 16,938 average monthly searches and 11,915 per 100,000 residents. Luton follows in eighth place (26,358 in total and 12,088 per 100,000 residents), Brighton ranks in ninth place (28,273 and 12,308 per 100,000 residents) and Chelmsford in tenth (23,031 and 12,671 per 100,000 residents).
A spokesperson from Luck.com has commented: “This study has revealed the top ten U.K. areas with the least amount of thrill seekers, with both market towns and metropolitan cities making the list.
“Winchester, a city with only 124,295 residents, has been crowned the least adrenaline seeking area. This includes playing the lottery, travelling and taking part in extreme sports. In comparison, Walsall, a market town with only 67,594 residents, has been crowned the most adrenaline–seeking area.
“Lottery is the most popular adrenaline–fuelled activity with an average monthly search volume of 4,979,974 nationwide in the last 12 months. In fact, research shows that almost 70% of the nation’s population play the national lottery daily across the U.K., totalling almost 45 million people.”
