“With more than 100,000 victims of modern slavery in Britain, we need urgent action from the UK’s new Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner to help bring the slavers to justice and engage businesses in the fight against this evil crime.”
That is the view of leading charity, Justice and Care, and the think tank, the Centre for Social Justice, which together run The Modern Slavery Policy Unit.
Today, the Home Secretary announced that Eleanor Lyons would become the new anti-slavery Commissioner, 18 months after the previous incumbent – Dame Sara Thornton – left the post.
Welcoming the appointment of the new Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Tatiana Gren-Jardan, Head of the Modern Slavery Policy Unit said:
“We are pleased that Eleanor Lyons has been appointed and look forward to working closely with her in our fight against this evil crime. Our research has revealed that there are more than 100,000 victims in the UK alone, far more than government and police estimates. We urgently need to address low conviction rates, the rise in cuckooing, compliance by business with anti-slavery laws, and better support of victims. As we look forward to a general election, the victims of slavery need manifesto commitments to a new modern slavery bill to give the police the powers they need to put their persecutors behind bars.”
