The Senedd will consider the Children’s Commissioners annual report for 2022-23. In the debate Jane Dodds will raise concerns about the courts’ decision to suspend the monitoring of unregistered placements for children deprived of liberty.

The recently revised guidelines determine that judges sitting on Family courts in England and Wales will no longer be required to oversee the process of registering placements. Due to an apparent ‘burden’ placed on the justice system.

Commenting, Jane Dodds MS said:

“I am very concerned about these revised guidelines, which do nothing but create a real risk of doing more harm than good to a care system in desperate need of reform.

“If judges are no longer required to oversee the process of registering placements for children deprived of liberty, then it will lead to unsafe environments for those most in need of care.

“These are some of the most vulnerable children in our care system and we need urgent clarity from the Welsh government on the steps that they will be taking in response to this decision from the courts.”
