Recently in the Senedd, the Welsh Liberal Democrats pressed the Welsh Labour Government on ensuring that children in care are given access to advocacy support.

Advocacy support is an essential tool in ensuring that young people within the care system are being listened to when decisions are being made regarding where they live and who they are living with, as well as which schools they will attend.

The party has stated that the current “active offer” of advocacy support is failing to work as well as needed, with many children being unaware of their entitlement to advocacy support.

Commenting, Jane Dodds MS said:

“Giving young people a meaningful voice is an essential cornerstone of protecting their rights as human beings, therefore It is essential that young people in care are given a voice in deciding their future.

And yet time and time again we are hearing from these young people how statutory services are failing to listen to their views when it comes to life-changing decisions on things.

The Welsh Government must do more to ensure that young people in care are being listened to, starting with a review into the national approach to statutory advocacy.

We must take an active stance in projecting our young peoples views, for the sake of their future and our own.”
