Data analysis of warranty claims costs for over 44 manufacturers and 300 models gives motorists greater insight into the financial implications of car ownership

The motoring experts behind MotorEasy, a leading car ownership solution with nearly one million members, have revealed the Skoda Citigo is top of its latest Reliability Index by model, followed closely by the Tesla Model 3 and Lexus CT.

The new top ten rankings by model only, manufacturer only and model per top ten manufacturer, are based on analysis of claims data drawn from over 200,000 years’ worth of extended warranty cover, conducted on 44 vehicle manufacturer makes and 300 models. Manufacturer brands and car models are scored according to the overall number of extended warranty claims since 20161, the average number of claims per year and crucially, the annual average cost of a claim.

Reliability Index by model only

Every car featured in MotorEasy’s most reliable model top ten index has earned a nine-star rating, although none have achieved the ultimate accolade of 10-stars. Whilst Ford, Peugeot, Tesla, Vauxhall and Volvo each have a model showcased in this table, none of them appear on the most reliable manufacturer Reliability Index.

When it comes to the most consistent manufacturer, the Reliability Index places Dacia in pole position, followed by Suzuki and Honda, although neither Dacia nor Honda have a car in the top ten model index. The comparatively lower costs associated with replacements parts for these manufacturers will be a key factor for their higher ranking.

The most dependable models for each of the top three most reliable manufacturer brands are the Dacia Logan, Suzuki Vitara and Honda Accord.

Duncan McClure Fisher, CEO of Intelligent Motoring, the parent company of MotorEasy, said, “Thoroughly exploring and understanding the costs associated with vehicle ownership before purchasing a used car will go a long way in planning for service, maintenance and repair costs down the line. Interestingly, only two premium manufacturer brands appear in our Reliability Index top ten tables – Infinity and Lexus – highlighting that a premium price tag for a vehicle doesn’t always guarantee ownership peace of mind.

“However, forewarned isn’t always forearmed. Spiraling energy, parts and labour prices have hit motorists hard in recent years. Regardless of the make, model, mileage and age of a vehicle, an extended warranty will give vital financial protection against the unexpected.”

The publication of MotorEasy’s latest Reliability Index marks the commitment of its parent company, Intelligent Motoring, to make accessible its data to provide consumers with even more information on individual vehicle reliability. In the coming months it will be publishing greater insight into the cost implications of owning different types of vehicles, for example by age and fuel type.

Concludes Duncan McClure Fisher, “By observing the ecosystem of people and their cars and gathering intel, we can not only arm them with insight needed to make an informed purchase but also provide the solutions needed for a hassle-free ownership experience.”
