As soon as the autumn and winter months hit, Brits love a cosy night in, with a candle or two, to rest and recharge.

According to Google data, online searches for ‘scented candles’ start climbing in October, continuing to rise until they reach a peak at the start of December. With this in mind, Grace Sherriff, from Kindred Fires, has shared the best candle scents to help your wellbeing during the upcoming colder months.

  1. For Sleep: Lavender, Thyme and Ylang Ylang

“An essential oil blend of lavender, thyme and ylang ylang has been found to enhance the quality of your sleep, so it’s the perfect choice for those looking to start their morning right. This is important during the autumn and winter months as your body’s internal clock can be disrupted due to lower light levels, which can lead to poorer sleep quality.”

  1. For Happiness: Bergamot, Lavender, Lemon Tea Tree and Sweet Oil

“A blend of bergamot, lavender, lemon tea and sweet oil is proven to have mood-boosting effects. This is particularly welcomed during the autumn and winter months, where a lack of exposure to sunlight can cause lower serotonin levels.”

  1. For Meditation: Lavender, Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang and Lemon Verbena

“An oil blend of lavender, cedarwood, ylang ylang and lemon verbena is high in linalool, which is known to increase alpha brain waves, present during states of meditation. If you’re looking to double-down on linalool, by meditating with candles, the next full moon is set to take place on the 28th of October. Traditionally, a full moon is when its spiritual energy is at its peak, making it popular amongst those who harvest its energy to meditate.”

  1. For Focus: Grapefruit, Lemon, Spearmint and Sweet Orange

“Vibrant citrus notes of grapefruit, lemon, sweet orange and refreshing spearmint provides an energising blend, sparking mental alertness and providing a serotonin boost. This can help to fight off daytime sleepiness, which can be caused by the body producing higher levels of melatonin than usual during the autumn and winter months.”

  1. For Calm: Bergamot, Lavender and Lemongrass

A blend of bergamot, lavender and lemongrass can help you to relax, and provide a soothing, stress-relieving atmosphere of peace. This can be very much welcomed during a period where Brits can often be busy with Christmas preparations.”

Commenting on the findings, Creative Director at Kindred Fires, Grace Sherriff said:

“With searches for ‘scented candles’ starting to rise, and predicted to increase until Christmas, it’s clear to see that Brits are taking more of an interest in their wellness. The start of shorter days and longer nights, can have some pretty unwelcome effects, such as poorer sleep quality and lower melatonin levels.”

“Well-being candles can provide the ultimate self-care experience, turning your space into a sanctuary, and providing mood enhancing effects and calming scents. They can also provide the perfect pick-me-up for family and friends to help them through the colder months.”
