Brits are being told the reason for their lack of sleep in December isn’t down to festive excitement, but in fact how much they’re drinking.
Ā The experts atĀ Online-Bedrooms.co.ukĀ have identified how drinking more alcohol over Christmas leads to a disrupted night’s sleep and a sluggish day after.
Many love to get in the Christmas spirit and enjoy festive drinks like mulled wine and buck’s fizz, but drinking too much in such a short period can ruin a sleep routine.
Christmas specialities like Eggnog may cause stomach aches and bloating which can cause a disrupted night’s sleep.
It can also cause serious dehydration and breathing difficulties at night by getting too merry with the drinks.
Nic Shacklock, fromĀ Online-Bedrooms.co.uk, said: “Many of us tend to eat and drink more over Christmas, but going overboard can have serious consequences for your sleep.
“Over drinking over Christmas can ruin a good sleep, not just for one night, but for an entire week.
“This is because it can cause dehydration, stomach ache and loud snoring by simply overdoing it on the festive drinks.
“Before reaching for the next glass of eggnog, it’s worth considering whether you’d rather have a decent night’s sleep.”
Here are the problems too much alcohol can cause to your sleep over Christmas:
- Dehydrated
If you don’t drink enough water before bed, don’t be surprised if you wake up at night wanting a glass. This can be worsened by drinking alcohol before hitting the pillow as it can make you dehydrated.
- Breathing difficulties
Drinking excessively can cause serious breathing difficulties which can suddenly wake you up in the middle of the night. Make sure to seek medical attention if the breathlessness continues to worsen.
- Eggnog ache
Too much Eggnog can make you bloated and cause stomach aches which can be difficult to sleep off.Ā The sugar, eggs, and spices risk being too rich and heavy which can cause digestive problems.
- Louder snoring
When you drink too much, your muscles will start to relax more when you get in bed. It may not be bad for you, but if you’re sleeping next to someone else, they’ll have to suffer the burden of heavy, loud snoring.
- Week-long fatigue
The “two-day hangovers” could last a whole week if you’re drinking consistently over the festive period. Try not to go full throttle with the drinks each night or you’ll spend most of Christmas with your head on the pillow.
- Disrupted sleep
Alcohol can lead to a disrupted sleep cycle as it can disrupt the body’s circadian rhythms making it more likely to wake up early and suddenly throughout the night.
