18th December 2023: Drivers should be on high alert as car break-ins rise over the Christmas period. Temporary car insurance provider, Cuvva shares a warning to drivers and simple steps to follow to reduce the risk of your car being a target.

While Christmas is a time of fun and excitement for millions across Britain, it also sees a surge in criminal activity targeting unattended vehicles, threatening to ruin the holiday spirit for innocent victims.

Several factors contribute to this increase. Criminals know cars may contain tempting gifts at this time of year. Many people travel at Christmas, and cars may be left unattended in unfamiliar locations. And during periods of cold weather, some drivers leave their cars running as they de-ice the windscreen while they pop back inside to the warmth.

Adam Kent from Cuvva said: “It’s important to remember that leaving valuables in your car increases the risk of break-ins and potential damage to both your possessions and the car itself. This not only jeopardises your no claims bonus but also leads to the inconvenience of not just losing your belongings but also dealing with the hassle of vehicle repairs during the festive period.”

Contents aren’t always covered by car insurance policies – and even if they are, there is usually a value limit to what can be claimed. Always check your policy documents and, if you are targeted, let your insurer know as soon as possible.

Drivers can take simple steps to reduce the risk of being targeted:

  • Secure your presents: Don’t hide gifts in the car or leave them unattended in your car. The allure of wrapped gifts or brand name shopping bags can be too tempting for thieves. Bring presents straight into your house when you get to your location.

  • Hide valuables: If you’re out and about and need to leave the car, make sure it’s always locked and you put any bags or presents into the boot or glove compartment where they are out of sight.

  • Take anti-theft measures: The more visibly anti-theft your car is, the less likely it is you’ll be targeted. Use steering wheel locks and security decals, and ensure your car alarm is functional.

  • Choose for safe parking: Park in well-lit areas if possible, especially at night, and choose car parks with surveillance cameras or attendants for added security.

  • Consider home delivery: Consider home delivery options to reduce the amount of time your car is parked in public spaces.

  • Avoid leaving your car unlocked: Especially when bringing presents inside after a long day of shopping, as an unattended car becomes susceptible to theft.

Kent adds: “Don’t hide gifts in your car and let Christmas be ruined by opportunistic Grinch-like car thieves. Bring gifts inside as soon as you get where you’re going, and take simple steps like parking in well-lit, busy areas, if possible, to reduce your likelihood of being targeted with car break-ins rising over the festive period.”
