Police track down stabbing suspect thanks to CCTV

Police used CCTV footage to track down a man who stabbed a stranger in Llanelli town centre, using just a description given by the victim to find him.

Dyfed-Powys Police officers were able to track the route taken by Gary Douglas Evans to and from the scene of the incident where he stabbed a man with a kitchen knife on November 9.

When he appeared at Swansea Crown Court for sentencing, the court heard how the 41-year-old, of Brynmor Road, could be seen on CCTV walking towards Llanelli Town Hall. It was there that he asked a man to use his phone.

When the man refused, Evans stabbed him twice in the abdomen with a knife and ran away.

Armed officers were immediately sent to the scene, and began looking for Evans using just the description provided by the victim.

Witnesses were spoken to, reporting that he had been ‘wielding multiple kitchen knives’, and a live CCTV trawl was carried out. As a result, Evans was identified as the offender, and was seen on camera walking through the town centre with a large knife hanging out of his pocket.

He was quickly arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He was sentenced this week to seven years in prison for the offence.

DC 128 Adams said: “This was a swift, but detailed investigation, using a number of tactics to locate and arrest the offender.

“The victim was unable to identify Evans as he was completely unknown to him, however using the description he gave of his hair colour, height and clothing, we were able to check all CCTV cameras covering the area to find him quickly.

“With a number of different teams all working together to gather and secure evidence, we were able to quickly apprehend a dangerous offender armed with weapons who could have posed a threat to others.”
