Dear Editor

Weasel words

It was reported in the media, just before Christmas, that the world’s largest offshore wind farm is to be built in the North Sea at a cost of £8bn. It was claimed the 200 wind generators located off Norfolk will have a total capacity of up to 2.9GW and could provide power for three million homes – Really!

The more astute reader will have noted the ‘weasel’ use of the word ‘could’ instead of ‘will’ – the reason for this is simply because that when the is little, or too much wind, this gargantuan wind folly will produce ZILCH power and three million homes will be looking for energy from the Grid – let us hope, for their sake, there will be ample spare capacity.

Emma Pinchbeck the chief executive of industry body Energy UK unbelievably claims this is very good news for the UK. I do not agree and we consumers will end up paying for this fiasco. Readers should know that Emma Pinchbeck was deputy CEO of the trade body RenewableUK from 2016-2020, and also sat on the board of Scottish Renewables, prior to joining RenewableUK, Emma was Head of the Climate Change team at WWF-UK – so no axe to grind here then – I would certainly not wish this person (heaven forbid) to design a secure and reliable grid network for the UK. Happy New Year to all.
